Question What Does It Say That All Miami Winners In Last 20 Years Have Won Slams But Not IW?

here is the winners of IW and Miami since 1993 and whether the winner won a slam at the time they won IW / Miami ... the interesting thing is that only in 5 years was the Miami champ not already a slam winner and all of those players went on to win slams later in their careers ... while at Indian Wells, in 11 years the champ was not already a slam winner and many of the winners (Fernandez, Hantuchova, Zvonareva, Wozniacki, Jankovic) have not yet won slams

So basically all we need now is Woz to win Miami. That simplifies things, thanks for the info!

Re: What Does It Say That All Miami Winners In Last 20 Years Have Won Slams But Not I

In the previous decade , the Williams only played IW twice , winning it once between them , whereas they won Miami 6/10 times. All it shows is that the Williams boycott has affected it immensely, it means nothing else in the grander scheme of things. Had the Williams boycotted Miami there would have been a similar number of random winners and there would be no ridiculous discussion over some cosmic relation to winning Miami and winning a Slam as there has so often been on here.

You could also argue that having these events back to back means that most players expend their efforts at IW and then those who are fresher at Miami snag it. I suppose the better players can generally take advantage of a tired field easier or something, I am sure there is a thread-worthy theory somewhere here.

Check and see how the Miami winners did at IW the same year (except SW/VW before 2002).

It means that historically Miami has always been the bigger tournament. Indian Wells got jealous and tried to copy Miami. They just don't have the history or legacy though.

I am not conceited, I am just convinced

Re: What Does It Say That All Miami Winners In Last 20 Years Have Won Slams But Not I

Yeah, Miami really hyped its "5th slam" status for a good long while. And the players did buy into it, prepping and pacing themselves accordingly. Plus, the better players may be better grooved by the end of that IW-Miami double.

Other than that: Williams boycott.

....

Someone is quietly turning back the clock...to them bulldozer dayz...

Always on the lookout for a great tennis match.

I agree. Miami was the first two week non-slam event (originally the Lipton event at Delray Beach), so it always attracted all the top players before the dawning of the premier mandatory events, forcing players to play at several other two week events too. I agree Indian Wells was tacked-on and never had the prestige. Miami also acts as the climax to the hard court season in the spring before tennis moves on to clay, so it also gives players a chance to win something big before the surface change and is often very important for the seedings/rankings going in to the clay season and the European summer slams.

If you look at the winners' list, it is not just a list of slam winners but hard court GS winners, and especially US Open winners - Azarenka is the only winner who has not yet won the US Open, so maybe that is a sign for her future...

The Williams boycot of IW and then their subsequent domination of Miami caused it. Hantuchova and Ivanovic at IW, going up against Serena at Miami. OUch.

Re: What Does It Say That All Miami Winners In Last 20 Years Have Won Slams But Not I

The only thing that stands out for me is Kim Clijsters' Indian Wells-Miami double in 2005, because she was unseeded in both tournaments. That meant she had to play and win FOURTEEN matches in four weeks. Quite impressive.

It says that next slamless winner of Miami will get the slam in the future and IW is basically irrelevant, right?

Re: What Does It Say That All Miami Winners In Last 20 Years Have Won Slams But Not I

IW level of tourn only got Tier I in mid-late 90's

since the IWTG tourn has moved a long way
in future with both having same status, IW will have better winners.
IW got better facilities

Good luck to my favs
