2002-2003 Grand Slam Champions.
Some journalists now say women tennis is a "lottery" after the 2011 season (four different GS winners).
Yet, ten years ago, the ATP had quite the year too.
Let's have a look at the 2002-2003 seasons.
Australian Open : Johansson def Safin / Capriati def. Hingis
French Open : Costa def. Ferrero / Serena def. Venus
Wimbledon : Hewitt def. Nalbandian / Serena def. Venus
US Open : Sampras def. Agassi / Serena def. Venus
Australian Open : Agassi def. Schüttler / Serena def. Venus
French Open : Ferrero def. Verkek / Henin def. Clijsters
Wimbledon : Federer def. Philippoussis / Serena def. Venus
US Open : Roddick def. Ferrero / Henin def. Clijsters
*All of the 2003 men finals were won in straight sets.
Over two seasons, there was height different GS winners on the ATP. Only two players played more than one final (13 players in total).
There was only three GS winners on the women side and all height finals were played within the same 6 players.
Any explanation on such a double standard? Will the WTA ever get back to such elitism?
