Williams sisters (not) playing MM: agreement with tournament organizers?

It has happened so many times now: Venus and Serena being on the entry list for an international tournament (MM) and a few days before the tournament start, they announce they can't play due to a new injury.
In the meanwhile tournament organizers portrayed them as big shot for the tournament, could sell tickets and get sponsors. Too bad for tennis fans who paid tickets and wanted to see them. For a small tournament it's important to have such a big name on the list.

For me it 's clear that the Williams sisters (as much as I respect them) usually have no intention of playing there. But do organizers know too? Do Venus or Serena (or their management) make some sort of agreement that organizers can use the brand "Williams" as advertisement for the tournament, knowing that they will not participate? How much does this cost? And more importantly: does WTA know?

Some examples that come to mind is Venus: Auckland, Serena: Linz, Monterrey
Let's wait for Kuala Lumpur...

I really don't want to have a go at Venus or Serena, and I hope this doesn't turn into a bashing thread. It would just be nice to have more insight in what really happens.

Serena Bangalore . From what I read, they had no clue what was coming (they should have done their HW)

SANIA JUSTINE ELENAD

Martina Hingis Ana Ivanovic Myskina Safarova

3. The whole World knows!

On a serious note, I think their stock is declining. Rapidly. I noticed last year at Eastbourne and Wimbledon a degree of indifference/not bothered in the spectators/fans I hadn't noticed before. I saw both at Eastbourne and was very excited they were there, but I noticed most other spectators were not that bothered and were actually cheering their opponents.

I think the more they withdraw from tournaments the less popular they become and their appearances are not as awaited/applauded as they once were.

Monica Seles Superstar. Her fans never forget.

Players I root for now: Heather, Laura, Lucie, Marion, Serena, Simona, Svetlana, Venus, Vika. And Caroline.
Doubles and Mixed Doubles are fun and underrated.

Where is the option for:

x) Two weeks out, organisers of 200k event finally realise they can't afford $1.5 bazillion in appearance money

I really don't know, that's why someone needs to expose what's really going on. A warts and all biog of the Williams family would be brilliant - Serena's autobiography didn't even mention Richard and Oracene's divorce, more like Stalina than Serena in terms of propaganda! What's Kitty Kelley up to these days?

Re: Williams sisters (not) playing MM: agreement with tournament organizers?

Venus often plays in the international tournaments she entered, she's just pulled out of everything this year so it's not like it has anything to do with the level of tournament with her. Venus has supported the regular tour quite frequently so it irritates me when people say otherwise. People just have short memories.

Serena, on the other hand, I don't know the answer for.

Venus Williams-Ana Ivanovic-Serena Williams-Vika Azarenka-Caroline Wozniacki

McHale-Stephens-Watson-Robson-Townsend

Brodsky-Muhammad-Hampton-Keys-Crawford-Andrews-Hardebeck

Why didn't NA-MUG make this thread?

And the dish ran away with the spoon..
but Hawaii was the only state that would recognize the marriage as legal.

So, um, what is your beef? You are dying to see Serena Williams and Venus Williams play at an International tournament? You don't like that tournament directors want to sell tickets?

I mean, seriously, both Serena and Venus are getting older, and as well Venus has Sjogren's syndrome, which basically causes fatigue and muscle ache--they are not going to be playing as many tournaments as they once did. In any case, both of them have played small tournaments before (Marbella, Guadalajara/Monterrey [can't remember which], etc.).

Are you looking for some kind of collusion so you can file a class-action lawsuit? What? Tournament directors want to sell tickets. They invite a big name and hope to god they show. If not, well, they sold some tickets. Tennis goes on!
