2 Consecutive Byes in a WTA tournament...

And I mean a real bye not Brie Whitehead

I noticed that in the 1996 Moscow Qualies 9th seed Elena Tatarkova recieved 2 straight byes to advance to the 3rd round where she beat Katerina Maleeva to go into the MD (for he record she reached the QF ) Funny that she got the extra bye because 1. There were 3 matches played in the 1st round of qualies and 2. She was only the 9th seed, why didn't seeds 1-8 get the 'extra' bye?

Interesting. Has anyone seen a tournament where a player got 2 conseutive byes?

Here is the draw if you're interested.

I don't know about "byes", but Stosur had two consecutive walkovers over Davenport and Dementieva to reach the 2005 Sydney final.

It was very likely she took the 1st seed position as an alternative, which may award her two byes.

Kuznetsova in Dubai 2009 had 1R bye, and then walkover from Medina Garrigues or Mirza (not sure), and in her first real match (R16) she lost to Kulikova so she lost in 3rd round like she would lost in 1st.

First round was a bye, second round was a walkover over 1st seed Aleksandra Olsza, who was moved into MD.

Is that really a walkover, though, when it's due to reshuffled draws?

Surprising answer as from my understanding tournament supervisor made a good judgement call to consider it as a bye (in general byes either be given to seeded players in descending order).

The difference between a bye and a default is that player with a walkover receives ranking points from the round preceding their elimination (eg P5 Toronto 2011: [6]Na Li with a R1 bye, a R2 walkover due to left hip injury of Shuai Peng and a R3 L in straight sets to [10]Samantha Stosur recieved 70 ranking points without winning a match) while someone with consecutive byes will be awarded with 1st round losers’ points.

Re: 2 Consecutive Byes in a WTA tournament...

For the ranking/h2h purposes it was counted as a bye, but in the drawsheets it is marked as w.o.
