In the history of the womens game who had the best backhand overhead?

It's often stated that it's the most difficult shot in the book to hit but who hit the backhand overhead better than the rest? One that springs to mind straight away for me was Gabriela Sabatini she seemed to not only have the skill to bring the ball down in the position where she wanted it to go but also the power in her shoulder to hit it pretty hard too not allowing her opponent to get a play on the ball. Any others that come to mind for anyone else?

(she was 14 in that pic)

RIP Elena Baltacha, thank you for dedicating your life to a sport we all love. You'll be missed but never forgotten.

I don't know... Mauresmo?

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

Mauresmo had a decent one too - I suppose it's really a shot that favours those who naturally play one handed backhands and being a great athlete would obviously help too. I've seen several pics of Suzanne Lenglen leaping in the air to play her shots and she probably had a great backhand overhead but I don't know for sure.

Margaret Court's was absolutely phenomenal. I wish that I could post it, but there are no clips online.

Yeah you're right I have seen a few clips of her play and net play combating lobs were rife during her playing days plus she was very tall and athletic.

Venus has a good one for women with 2hb. She can put two hands on it and smash it hard as if it was a regular one.

Re: In the history of the womens game who had the best backhand overhead?

I think Margaret Court, Billie-Jean King, Evonne Goolagong & Martina Navratilova had some of the best backhand overheads in the modern era.

Fave recent players: .. Seles .. Hingis .. Serena .. Venus .. Federer .. Roddick .. Hewitt .. Haas .. Rafter .. Safin .. Radwanska ..
60s/70s: Evonne Goolagong .. Francoise Durr .. Chris Evert .. Margaret Court .. Nancy Richey .. Maria Bueno .. Billie-Jean King .. Lesley Turner .. Virginia Wade .. Ken Rosewall .. Rod Laver .. Bjorn Borg ..
Entertainers: .. Diana Ross .. Dionne Warwick .. Shirley Bassey .. Randy Crawford .. Burt Bacharach .. ABBA .. Woody Allen .. Maggie Smith .. Gena Rowlands .. Judy Davis .. Heath Ledger .. Little Britain ..
Inspiration: .. Jeshua Ben Josepth .. Conversations with God .. Abraham with Esther & Jerry Hicks .. P'taah ..

Althea Gibson, she had a one-handed one, plus she just gobbled up the net, she was tall as hell

Good call on Evonne. Forgot about her.

I'll add Maria Bueno. Remarkable overhead backhand.

Yeah Venus definitely has a great backhand overhead especially when she can hit it with 2 hands not bad with one hand either.

Re: In the history of the womens game who had the best backhand overhead?

I actually think lobbing to Henin's backhand to provoke a BH smash was smart, because she was limited due to height.

Navratilova and King were the most adept IMO. King had superlative technique, and Navratilova's athleticism gave her a distinct advantage.
