If I read this right, Hantuchova is the only teenaged player under 21 to debut in the top twenty this year. That's about the norm, one or two a year.

Hmm is that true? I'll guess, instead of doing research

96 Hingis
97 Spirlea?
98 Schnyder, V.Williams
99 S.Willaims
00 Kournikova, Dementieva*, Dokic*
01 Henin, Clijsters
02 Hantuchova

* Not really sure Dementieva or Dokic

dementieva got in the top 20 the year she got to the semi's of the us open in 2000.

on the sanex site is says dokic ended 2000 ranked #26 but she may have gone in and out of the top 20 before the end of the year but i don't think she did. i'm pretty sure dokic got in the top 20 in 2001 for the first time.

Go the aussies! stosur!!!
and good luck russians: dementieva, safina, kirilenko, sharapova, kuznetsova, bovina, zvonareva, dushevina.

also good luck to: azarenka, lucic, sprem, vakulenko, vaidisova, safarova, ivanovic, groenefeld, mirza, krajicek, kvitkova, larcher de brito, lisicki.

It is very nice that Serena finished above 6000 pts and Venus above 5000.

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!
SERENA PRINCESS OF POWER

Victoria Duval - coming to a slam near you
Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

Kim debuted in the top 20 in 2000.

Exactly TSequoia01 .. Imagine Venus's point total is higher than when she won 2 slams last year---- then again she played more tournaments and won one extra tournament...

Barring injury, I think that settles the top four seeds at OZ. Justine Henin has finalist points coming off from Gold Coast before OZ seeds are made. She can't possibly catch Kim.

Serena finished 1998 at #20
And Kournikova debuted in 1998 i am pretty sure.
In 1997, there were no under 21 debutants.

Out of Kim, Justine, and Jelena, Jelena was the LAST to enter the top 20, not the first.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

There are really only one issue going on before OZ seeds are made. There's only one week of tournaments before that happens, so people who want to move HAVE to move. At issue? The #16 seed.

1644 15 Patty Schnyder

1617 16 Anna Smashnova
1596 17 Silvia Farina Elia

1444 18 Alexandra Stevenson
1426 19 Elena Dementieva

You can get 200 points winning Gold Coast, if you're lucky. Patty Schnyder WILL be seeded #16 or better. Smashnova, Farina Elia, Stevenson and Dementieva, would all have to to earn enough points that week to pass Patty. There aren't enough points for that. And let's be realistic. Farina Elia has a 150 point advantage right now. So all the important issues for OZ seeds are probably set.

01-01 Serena Williams
02-02 Venus Williams
03-04 Jennifer Capriati
03-04 Kim Clijsters

05-08 Justine Henin
05-08 Amelie Mauresmo
05-08 Monica Seles
05-08 Daniela Hantuchova

09-16 Martina Hingis
09-16 Anastasia Myskina
09-16 Lindsay Davenport
09-16 Chanda Rubin
09-16 Magdalena Maleeva
09-16 Patty Schnyder
09-16 Anna Smashnova
09-16 Silvia Farina Elia

Stevenson and Dementieva are waiting in the wings for health issues.
*****

The match that SHOULD have happened.

Hantuchova vs Dokic for #8.

2668 08 Daniela Hantuchova
2506 09 Jelena Dokic
2348 10 Martina Hingis

But Dokic won't set foot in OZ, and Hingis is just too far back.

PhoenixStorm - There's one week of tournaments before OZ seeds are made. Sydney doesn't matter, and even if it did, Jenn lost early to Alexandra last year. Venus got 198 points for winning Gold Coast last year. That's about as much as Kim can add. Jenn has a 239 point lead. Kim can make it close, but she can't catch Jenn with the results of a single Tier III tournament to work with.
