Re: Would we have ever heard the name Sharapova if wooden raquets were the norm?
Good Lord. You people act like wooden rackets are like something out of the stone age.
I grew up with a wooden racket, and the basic strokes are still the same. Really, you tend to be able to hit more shots now, rather than less because you don't have to use the classic stance (e.g. open stance is nearly impossible with wooden rackets and inside out shots are a lot trickier) but if you have a sweet stroke like TOB did prior to her shoulder going out of whack, you'd have a had a good stroke with a woodie. Indeed, the fact her opponents couldn't hit the ball as hard might have made it harder to expose her movement, and she might have been even more successful. (Or it might have made it harder for her to overpower her opponents, and left her exposed more often in longer rallies, we'll never know).
But really, going from wood to a composite isn't so inconceivable--the generation of the late '70s and '80s did it, many of the mid-career (Conners, McEnroe, Evert, Navritalova, etc.)
Fuck, I did it. (And suck with both).
