Hmmmm. I'd say peak Martina just trumps peak Margaret. But would be great to watch!

With the wooden racquets of her prime, Meg would have a chance. (As she would have in the 70's vs. "pre-fitness freak" Martina I, if younger then). But once the le... le... err, lefthander started her Lendl style boot camp fitness regime, it would have been all one sided in her favor. Only peak Chrissie on clay, peak Graf, Seles, or Serena on HCs, and peak Venus on grass were in the same league as the original Cze-lefty. (Maybe peak Justine, on clay only).

Re: Who would win: Peak Cout vs Navratilova?

CLAY - COURT
GRASS - EVEN. Court would have the ground strokes to pass Nav at the net, so Martina would not get there as often as she did against Chris. Court had a better serve and net game than Evert. It was Evert's lack of net play that caused her to lose so many close matches to Martina on grass.
HARD - Slight edge to Court. Better ground strokes and good net play would give Margreat the edge on hard courts. Margreat's superior serve to Evert's would also help her beat Navratilova on hard courts. I was surprised that Evert did so well against Nav on hard courts. Margreat would do even better. Using the same equipment and in their primes at the same time, Margreat, would have the edge over Navratilova on any court.

Re: Who would win: Peak Cout vs Navratilova?

I'd favour Court, just based on the players they faced in their respective primes. Court competed in a field of world-class serve and volleyers whereas Martina dominated at a time when there was no great attacking player. Since both of them are attacking players, I'd give the edge to Court who'd have a lot more experience facing quality attacking opposition.

FUCK YOU, SEWTA.

Re: Who would win: Peak Cout vs Navratilova?

At their peak, I'd take Court on clay and Navratilova on the other two surfaces. Though it pains me to admit it, I think Navratilova -- when she dominated -- did so more thoroughly than anyone in the game.

I know this isn't the thread, but from watching old youtube videos I like Chris Evert, Hana Mandlikova and Evonne Goolagong

Re: Who would win: Peak Cout vs Navratilova?

I think peak Martina would beat any women player in the Open Era (other than possibly peak Serena, the only one I could see overwhelming her with so much sheer power) and that includes all of Court, Graf, or Evert. Court's peak lasted alot longer than Martina's though.

Keep in mind peak Martina was losing about 2 matches a year and beat the great Chris Evert 13 times in a row! As great as Court is she didnt ever lose that few matches a year over a 3 or 4 year span, and I cant imagine her beating someone like Evert 13 times in a row.
