Will Serena break a longevity mark held by Graf, Martina and Evert this year?

Chris Evert (1974 - 1986), Martina Navratilova (1978 - 1990) and Steffi Graf (1987 - 1999) all share a similar amazing amount of time between their first slam and last slam wins.

I thought Serena would win the US Open this year to join those great players in the same bracket (1999 - 2011) of there being 12 years between first and last slam victories..

But she actually has a great chance at breaking that record and joining Margaret Court who I think has 13 years between first and last slam.

Will she do it? I think yes..

Of even more significance, there's this little gap in Graf's resume the size of the hole in the ozone layer: It's called Monica Seles. Was Graf the best female player of all time? She wasn't even the best in the heart of her career.

Graf 87-99* just pointing out a little typo... And probably, yes. I could see her winning slams for another ~three years honestly.

It will be an amazing accomplishment if/when she does break it.

I think so...she's a strong contender/favorite at least 3 of the majors. If she can remain healthy next year, should win one Oz or Wimby.

Venus looks like she's gonna retire next year(If things still don't work well till Wimbledon). But will Serena follow her big sis and retire at the same time?

I used to think so but I'm pretty sure Serena said recently she wouldn't retire even if Venus did. Regardless, now that Venus has her health issues diagnosed I don't think she will retire next year either unless she has no progress in her results or health.

I dont think so. I think after the year from hell, a lot of stuff got put into perspective for her. I mean she broke down after 1R of Wimbledon. I think her appreciation for just playing tennis is at an all time high right now and I really think that she is going to keep playing for at least 3 more years (as long as no serious injuries interfere)

Yep, Serena got a new perspective on tennis. I expect her to play after 2012 and to still be a factor.

Re: Will Serena break a longevity mark held by Graf, Martina and Evert this year?

I fully expect Serena to win atleast 1 more slam, probably multiple. I think it might be hard for her to win the French or Wimbledon again though since the physical part of her game (especialy movement) seems to be what is declining most. Of course she could serve and hit her way to another Wimbledon title but it wont be easy to beat another big hitter like Kvitova if she isnt moving quickly enough. I think the 2 hard court slams will remain good chances for her for awhile, with still some chance at Wimbledon. Cant see her ever winning another French even with what a joke that event has become. I hope she proves me wrong since I think she deserves to be rated the 2nd best clay courter of this generation, and if she won another French nobody could even challenge the claim.

***DEVIL'S ADVOCATE POST***

If Evert, Navratilova, Graf and Court only played 8-12 tournaments a year, they all probably would have had a longer span of time between their first and last majors, and if Serena had played a full-time schedule, she at least would be tied with Evert and Navratilova (18) by now.
