Sam Stosur's coach says her ranking doesn't do her justice!

Quote:
Taylor rates Stosur, with titleholder Kim Clijsters, four-time winner Serena Williams and Kvitova among the four best chances at Melbourne Park, claiming her proven ability to ''win the big match against the big players'' warranted a rating above her ranking.

The Australian Open, he said, was ''a big challenge'', given her modest results in the past, but insisted: ''Sam's a better player than someone that's reached the fourth round. She'll go in there as one of the favourites and she deserves to be one of the favourites, but there's probably a group of four or five girls equal to Sam with the same chance.''

Taylor considers this grand slam-enhanced year as superior to last, despite a win-loss record of 45-23 compared with 47-19 in 2010. Stosur endured an ordinary start, and won a single title, but that represented ''obviously the absolute biggest high that a player could ever ask for in the US Open''.

I'll second that. Sam is certainly playing better tennis than say Zvo or Woz lately. As long as she does not have such a unlucky draw like last year, she'll come up good at AO.

What a dumb coach. Putting more pressure on the already immense pressure there is for her to perform at her home slam.

Yeah, er, Dave is pretty much the best thing that has ever happened to Sam.

I don't really see what the problem is with what he said. Is Sam top four? Well, it's a very optimistic assessment, particularly if you assume that Kim is going to be fit and healthy. But a coach being positive about the prospects of his charge - surely this isn't too surprising?

I think on form she'd have to be amongst the 6-8 players who *could* win the AO. So I personally would say her ranking is about right (except swap Li Na and Woz for Kim and Serena above her). It's definitely a pressurised environment for her, but the last two years she's been knocked out early by Serena and Kvitova. If she gets a better draw, who knows?

Stosur has an abysmal record in finals. She crumbled under the pressure of being the heavy favorite at RG against Schiavone.

She came through at the USO partly because there was zero pressure on her. For her coach to be hyping her as one of the top 4 contenders given her history with dealing with pressure isn't smart IMO.

If her ranking doesn't do her justice, then fine. Leave it alone and let her game speak for itself.

Dave is a very down to earth guy, and knows Sam better than anyone else on earth, both her strengths and her weaknesses. He's been right about her in the past when pretty well everyone else on the planet got it wrong. You can quibble about whether she's one of the top 4 or top 5 or top 6 contenders for the AO, but if Dave says she's in the mix I'm inclined to believe him. And I don't think this will add to the pressure on Sam. Dave's point is that Sam is one of a small group of big-match players who step up to the plate when it really matters.

I think you underestimate Sam. Not many people can defeat SW in the GS final the way she did it. Sam worked her butt off during the year and she did turn-around her season. Unfortunately people do not give her enough credit for it. IMHO she improved her backhand, movement and her seve was more effective also since I saw her last time at AO.

I know what you're saying. (Although I think Franny played amazing well in the RG final).

Backing up her first GS title with another one, in her home country, is, well, going to be a very challenging feat - perhaps bordering on the impossible. But I think she's definitely capable of getting to the second week, and from there it really depends on how the draw turns out.

This comment is almost too stupid to warrant a reply, but I'll do it anyway. Most of the losses are ancient history, Sam is a totally different player compared to even two years ago. Take a look at who she's playing finals against these days, and take a look at e.g. Wozniacki's finals this year. Take a look at Sam's record against top 5 players this year. Take a look at how much her performances have improved in the second half of this year. You can draw your own conclusions.

Sam has the game no doubt, but she has shown that she can falter under pressure. That's my point. Everything else you wrote is not what I'm talking about.
