Benefits of Being Short?

Are there any benefits of being a short tennis player??

My parents always persuaded me to try out tennis because there wasn't any major height advantages, but looking at all the top players, I think it's hard to be short and good except for Coetzer and today, Cibulkova, I guess.

^ Yes, short players' movement are really good. Look at Cibulkova, Coetzer, Zheng Jie, Henin, etc.. they all have great movement around the court.

Henin is actually tall when you compare her to the likes of Cibulkova and Zheng.

I believe you have cause and effect wrong.
Short players do not automatically have great movement.

Short players must possess great movement to be able to compete with the bigger girls. The short girls that can't move get weeded out quickly, so you end up at the pro level with short players that have good movement and have found ways to compensate for their height disadvantage (E.g great ROS, court positioning etc).

downside of this is that you'll get very tired easily if you don't have enough stamina. everyone can run and chase down balls but it depends on whether they want to. If you're being short and couldn't overpower your oppponents, your only way to win the match is to just put the balls back into the court for as many as possible.

Re: Benefits of Being Short?

The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages of being a short tennis player.

I suppose an advantage is that it is easier to get down to low balls. But you will receive a lot more topspin shots than slices so it's not really that helpful.

The biggest disadvantages are on the serve and ROS (due to lack of reach).
Anytime I play a short player, I know I'm going to get aces on my slice serve out wide that might ordinarily come back against a taller player.

So true.

There's generally no advantage of being short in sports that involve reach... Can someone help me think of one?

Re: Benefits of Being Short?

Short players dont have to bend their knees that low plus it is easier for them to stand right in the hitting position since it is all about small steps in tennis und when you are short it is def easier to do high frequent short steps.
Also to return body serves is easier since short players dont have long wings.
Disadvantage is net coverage, serve (due to smaller angle) and side to side coverage (see how much court Venus can cover with her long limps but then again how venus' weakness is the small steps into the court).

QFT.

There are short girls that are mediocre movers - Paszek, Rezai. But then they are also heavily built and hit as big as the biggest girls.
