USO'11: Has Anybody Else Noticed The Excitement and Anticipation, It's Kind Of ODD

We are few days away form the USO'11. but I am a little taken aback by the amount of excitement, anticipation and enthusiasm I am seeing and feeling.

Yet, I kind feel it is "undeserved" or "misplaced", given what has been going on in the WTA.

But that seems to have been put away quickly when the seeding were announced and gone up another notch when the draw came out.

I am not saying we are in 200/2001/2002 atmosphere again , but whatever it is, it is good for USO'11.

Hope it will continue during the competition..

US Open 2011: The big build-up at Flushing Meadows

Some sights and sounds from New York as the build-up to the final Grand Slam of the year gets under way

Imagine it’s the eve of your five-year-old’s birthday. The cake is made, the presents are bought, the fridge is overflowing with goodies for the big day—and the excitement is steaming and bubbling under the surface like a volcano about to erupt.

That same barely-contained excitement is beginning to infuse Flushing Meadows in this, the build-up week to the main event.

Almost everything is in place: The seeds are set and the qualifiers are fighting for their chance to be in the game when the US Open takes off on Monday next.
There’s a buzz, though the crowds are still light. There’s activity in every direction, but without the frenetic atmosphere that makes the air hum when the grounds are filled to bursting.
For some, the biggest pleasure is found around the strings of green and blue courts, where glowing faces of tennis enthusiasts watch the ambitions of qualifiers fulfilled or dashed.
For others, the chief pleasure is found around the more palatial courts, watching the already-made-its go through their paces.
Here, conversations between old friends who have enjoyed these simple pleasures for 25 years mingle with gaggles of teenagers sharing stories of their own exploits with a racket.

Wide-eyed kids, with arms barely long enough to embrace their giant yellow balls, bustle around the practising stars and are rewarded with long signing sessions: It’s not only the spectators who are chilled at this stage of the tournament.
Come Monday, with the gloves off, things may be rather different for those same players. They will be different for the kids, too, as their laughter turns to jaw-dropping amazement at the power and the fury of the real deal in the biggest and brightest, hottest and happiest Slam of all.
On Monday, then, the party will begin and presents will be unwrapped one exciting match at a time. Meanwhile, there are morsels aplenty to satisfy—just—the biggest appetite. Here are a few tasters…

Probably the rise and return of Serena Williams is the biggest factor.
Also Maria Sharapova having pre-shoulder-injury-like results.

And on the men's side, the decline of Nadal and Federer, the rise of Djokovic, and for American interests, Mardy Fish.

Faves: Sharapova, Hantuchova, Safarova, Goerges
GO BEARS!

Beside Serena and Maria, there is also Na Li, Kvitova the 2 previous GS winners.
Thi could also be the year when Azarenka, Vera, Caro make a breakthrough, despite their summer record. And there you have young threats such a Aga, Petko, etc..

I do think each fan base secretly thinks their fave has a chance to make a break through.

Remember Toronto a few weeks ago?

But we can't possibly see that kind of massacre here. Plus, we have a Federer-Djokovic SF to look forward to if the women's draw falls apart.

More importantly, there will actually be decent streams.

I hope not.

In Toronto, many players were still rusty , now they have few matches under their belt, I doubt that will happen at the USO.

I hope so but Tsonga and Fish are looming... That quarter is a nightmare.

It's what happens when the HBIC GOAT Sarin Williams is back to snatch all the weaves in the business.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

I know one fave of yours who's still rusty...

But yeah, most of them will be ready. Knowing the WTA, we'll see 1/3 of the seeds out after R2, but that's 10x better than what we had at Toronto.

There's no anticipation for me. I can only see Serena beating all of the Serbian girls en route to the title. :coffee:

Yes, to tell you the truth, I have no idea what to expect from Venus.
Refusing the NH wild card pose more questions than answers.

But lie any other fans who use more faith and heart than their mind, I am hopeful that she will do fine.

I don't know anyone who is excited for either side. Only question I get is if Serena is playing followed by "who else?" to which I reply "no one you'd care about"

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

I am also hoping some young Americans will come out of nowhere and have a breakthrough to second week.
With Serena and Venus nearing retirement, we need something to look forward to

It's not odd : Serena Williams is back. Makes perfect sense.

With Kimberly Out, the chances are WAY better we wont have another dull, uninteresting and boring final like in 09, 10 and 05!

Hopefully it will be something like 08!
