Anyone remember the days when New Haven was a pretty good tournament?

I remember the days when the New Haven tournament was played by all the top players. I remember when players like steffi, monica, lindsay, justine, the williams, capriati and hingis played this tournament. Has the respect for the tournament gone away? It used to produce such great matches there.

Re: Anyone remember the days when New Haven was a pretty good tournament?

Serena never played here.

The last legitimate event for me was 2006 with the Henin/Davenport final. Since then, it's been a joke. This was the event Venus Williams defeated Justine Henin, Jennifer Capriati, and Lindsay Davenport in a two-day span. Can you imagine that at an event like this? I don't think so.

2001 event had:
Venus
Davenport
Capriati
Clijsters
Henin
Mauresmo
Dementieva
Tauziat

I believe the US Open Series and the roadmap destroyed this event.

What's really bad about this tournament is the media coverage. For christ's sake, even Bastad was streamed completely.... and there's zero coverage from New Haven until Thursday..pathetic.

This. Dallas has streams, and it's a brand new event with fewer top players. Why not New Haven?

its always easy speaking from 10 years distance.
in 2001, was the tournament better only because Clijsters, Henin, Tauziat, Mauresmo, Dementieva?
maybe in 2021 people gonna praise the current field.

Funny to see how that's the same in pretty much all sports though. The past is always glorified, nobody seems to be willing the boring matches/tournaments of that era.

That's the thing driving this forum Hindsight makes it seem like every match played in every tournament 10 years was quality.

I agree with you, not every match players 10 ago were better than today's matches.

However, this particular lineup was quiet impressive and the matches were really high quality
You could feel the wind of change in the air, you could feel the WTA was on the move and in the right direction..

2001 event had:
Venus
Davenport
Capriati
Clijsters
Henin
Mauresmo
Dementieva
Tauziat

I remember in 2000 Clijsters and Henin were already exciting prospects, let alone 2001. By New Haven 2001 Dementieva had had a nice season prior and had been top ten in 2001, Clijsters and Henin had had great French/Wimbledon runs, Mauresmo was top ten, Tauziat was near her peak and a top player.

These players are just more interesting than the current ones now. It isn't just about quality, the players now aren't interesting, exciting or all that memorable. Give me Tauziat, any of these players, over Wozniacki any day. They were all part of some great, exciting matches by that point, AND in recent memory, so what gives?

Jankovic's most interesting matches lately were against Fran who is a showboat, Wozniacki is pretty much never part of any good matches, but at least there is Li and Bartoli who have given a good share of excitement this year.

Que la joie soit écrite sur le monde et le ciel au-dessus.

true, there was much more depth in the field than there was now.

I just realized that Venus won 4 consecutive titles there

Re: Anyone remember the days when New Haven was a pretty good tournament?

It's a shame but it's a combination of the fact that there are less top Americans than there were back then and that now there are two Premier 5's back to back before New Haven so you would be required to play three tournaments in a row before the U.S. Open if you played New Haven.

Also, I understand that nostalgia can sometimes be annoying but trust anyone who watched tennis back then, the tour was in much better shape. The top players were stars because they had personality and won week in and week out so it created strong rivalries. Hopefully the new girls can start stepping in and filling the void because the tour desperately needs it.
