If Serena or Sharapova don't win US OPEN will anyone be surprised?

The media are clear that the two favourites to win the US OPEN are Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. However, what if Serena and Sharapova are in the same side of the draw or could meet early? Does anyone think another player can win the whole event? Unpredictable things tend to happen on the WTA. Nobody thought Li Na was going to win the French Open but she did. Kvitova was considered a contender but was she a real favourite to win Wimbledon?

Where is Serena going to be seeded? Can the USTA bend the rules and give Serena a higher seeding like they did for Monica Seles in 1995? Serena's been off the tour for a year couldn't she get a special seeding?

I keep trying to kid myself they won't but, for some reason I just keep coming back to one of them.

Re: If Serena or Sharapova don't win US OPEN will anyone be surprised?

Well, we've had Vera Zvonareva, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Mary Pierce and Elena Dementieva in 6 of the last 7 years finals. So, I'm kind of thinking we'll get a player who's won at least 3+ slams in the final playing, either a player making her debut or a player who has won a slam or at least been to the final of 1+, am I making any sense?

Anyway, it's usually a sr8 sets win for someone, whens the last time we had a 3 set final? Must be nearly 20 years ago?

Look, Maria has not been that impressive.

In my opinion, the chance of winning should be ranked like this

SERENA
...
...

Li Na
Kvitova
Azarenka
Maria
Vera
Caro
Aga

Venus (unknown quantity)

If I had to create a thread like this one, I will only use Serena in the title

Re: If Serena or Sharapova don't win US OPEN will anyone be surprised?

If Serena doesn´t win YES
Serena out, Sharapova doesn´t win NO

Sharapova just went three sets with Zvonareva and Jankovic. Kvitova, Petkovic and Na Li have already beaten her at Slams this year. Radwanska did anything in her power, not to beat Maria at the French Open. Azarenka beat her in the big Miami final. Last time I saw Venus play elite tennis was last years US Open, and Sharapova ain´t as good as Clijsters at the USO. Literally the only top 15 player, that would shock me, if she beat Maria was Stosur and only Rory knows what the Woz is up to.

Sharapova´s low odds are a combination of her name, her great consistency this year and her Slam champion status, that gives her a little mental edge, but I´d say on a match by match basis, she is just as vulnerable as all the other top players, except for Serena.

- Caroline Wozniacki has never beaten a reigning world #1.
- Caroline Wozniacki has never beaten a top 5 player at a major.
- Caroline Wozniacki has not beaten a top 3 player en route to any of her 23 titles.
- Caroline Wozniacki has beaten two top 5 players en route to her 23 titles (#4 Zvonareva and #5 Schiavone)

-Her fans think she had very bad luck with her Grand Slam and Regular Tour draws.

No, that is the American Maria, not the Russian one.

I just wanted to remove her form the thread title, not from contention!

Re: If Serena or Sharapova don't win US OPEN will anyone be surprised?

Well, we know how well the Media favorites worked out for the French Open and Wimbledon. Right?

Yes. I would be very surprised if either one of them won, especially Sharapova.

PS: Kvitova was one of the top 4-6 betting favorites from the very start of the tournament (including Clijsters and Venus), as a virtual unknown and a defending semi-finalist.

Of course she was a serious contender (whether the media chose to put her matches on Television or not).

Just like in this tournament, she started off as a tie with Serena as a 3:1 betting favorite, and now she dropped to 4th position as a 14:1 betting favorite. So if she wins, they gonna pretend it's a shock again (especially as her odds would increase with good play)? Lol

I would be surprised if Sharapova won. That is, pleasantly and joyfully surprised.

Anybody in the media who thinks Sharapova is a favorite hasn't been watching her play. I'd be shocked if Sharapova wins the USOpen. the commentators themselves said in last week's final that she wasn't playing the kind of tennis that wins the USOpen. And Sharapova was winning.

As for being shocked if anyone other than Serena wins, Zvonareva was the finalist last year, so that'd be no shock, Li Na would be no surprise, she's made a hard court slam final, and won a slam, Azarenka has the physical skills, Kuznetsova does have two slam singles titles already. She could play above her level a third time. And Kvitova could be ready to do the WB-US double.

Serena isn't a lock.

And, while I discount Sharapova, she COULD have a flashback to her 2006 level, and there are certain players on the tour who really can't generate enough pace to exploit Sharapova's lack of movement. The right draw (NOT a soft draw, just the right one) and she could win it.

Oh yeah, and whatshername? The world #1. #1 ranked players HAVE won slams before. In fact, it was commonplace, once a upon a time.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

I'll be very surprised if anyone other than Vika wins it.
