Re: Question about Jelena Jankovic aka THE EMPRESS....
She used to be a counter-puncher, but her movement and ground-strokes have deteriorated quite badly over the past couple of years with injuries and lost confidence. Her backhand which was once her go-to shot is now really just basically a solid shot for her. During 2007 and 2008, you never knew when she was about to fire a winner off that wing, now I just don't know, she seems to have lost the balance she once had off that side, and has developed a habit of pulling off the shot rather than transferring her body weight through.
She has never had a brilliant forehand, but it was at it's best, solid. However, she did lack potency on that wing to put balls away, which ultimately cost her in big matches, such as her Semi-final against Ivanovic at Roland Garros. Multiple times she had opportunities to end points, but she just could not hit the winner off the forehand and allows Ivanovic back into it. These days, I cringe when-ever she hits a forehand. It's always awfully loopy, and generally totally lacking penetration, simply sitting up in the court and asking to be clobbered.
I hope she can take away some confidence from this week and start committing to her shots. It was really enjoyable to watch her actually coming into net again. She really has some underrated skills at the net, and probably some of the best reactions, especially when it comes to body shots.
I really enjoy watching Jelena play well, but I also find her terrible when she plays badly. I still think she's a counter-puncher, she feeds her opponent a solid diet of reasonable pace, and doesn't junk ball very often, but she just seems to be afraid to go for her shots when she gets the chance, or misses badly when she does.
at this point even Jesus might lose a poll against Kim
