Maria had more to lose than Jankovic..so good for her to tough out the win. Another loss in a final, against an opponent who hadn't done a thing all year, could've been disastrous.
Yes, had she lost, with the way she played, against an opponent who has not done well as of late, and so close to the USO, it would have been a confidence shaking and loads of doubt about what she was doing.
Even with this win, she should still ask herself questions about her game and where she is (compared to Serena- we know where she is but players, including Serena herself, do in their mind anyway).
A loss will have raised disturbing question at the core of Maria's game: Can she still win with fighting spirit, determination and intensity even when she is not playing well?
Just posing this question has the effect of acknowledging the elephant in the room... with all its implication.
It is like asking Venus Williams if she can win on grass, or Henin if she can still win on clay, or Serena if she can still win when she goes to the final.
Asking the question is a loaded statement.
So Maria's win has helped pushed that question aside in her mind and that of tennis fans.
The bottom line is she goes to USO with more confidence now.
As for JJ, despite the loss, she has to be pleased with where she ended up, considering where she was just2 weeks ago.
