Too many injuries? Is the game to physical?

The tour definitly got more & more physical in the last years. Is that the reason why nobody can dominate the tour for a long time?

Clijsters struggles again with injuries, Henin re-retired, Sharapova is still struggeling with her serve since the shoulder injury and the Williams sisters have been out of action for pretty much a year.

Is the stress of playing tennis plus extreme workout too much for the girls?? Is the game to physical??

Where are the top players? Why are they injured all the time?

How is it possible that a player like Wozniacki with so many great weaknesses got to the top of the rankings?

Nothing against Wozniacki! She took this chance. But shame on all the top players who lost against Wozniacki!

But in fact: She didn't even beat top players! The only top ten players she beat this year are 30-year-old Schiavone and struggeling Jankovic.

Whenever she met a Top 20 player in decent form - she lost. That's why she won't win a big title. And it's going south from now on btw.

And still: She is the # 1 in the rankings far ahead of Clijsters and Zvonareva.

Why? Because she is playing a full scheduled season!

Well, maybe she is even playing to many tournaments to concentrate on the big ones.

Whatever, it is enough to be at the top of this mess!

The WTA-tour desperetly needs a star like Serena at the top again!

Kvitova & Co are not there yet. And to be honest I don't see many future stars right now other than Kvitova. Noone who could dominate Grand Slam tournaments for years.

The weird thing is that on the ATP tour the Top 4 (maybe plus Söderling and Del Potro) are as dominate as no generation before although the men's game got more physical too.

The reason behind that is that they put tremendous amount of dedication into their fitness. Dieting, workouts, everything is done strictly to bolster them.

Meanwhile, I can't see many of the women logging long hours in the gym, weight training, dieting, etc.
Roger does crazy things like avoiding playing Ping Pong to keep himself from any chance of injury. Yet you have Serena and Kim dancing at weddings every weekend.

Agree. Most women are not that ambitious that they would sacrifice their whole life to get to the top. They are satisfied with less.

Even Serena and Venus don't have this absolute will like Navratilova, Graf or Seles had.

That's why I don't consider her as a top player. She took the chance of this big gap on the tour and that is respactable.

But to me a top player is going for it and not waiting for the opponent to miss. A real top player doesn't have a weakness, dominates and is mentally strong when it really matters. Against the top players in the real big matches at the Slams.

The tour desperatly needs the stars! An equivalent to the top 4 on the ATP: Djokovic-Nadal-Federer-Murray!

On contrary, if they want equal payment it should be as physical as mens competition

Re: Too many injuries? Is the game to physical?

It also depends on their playing style. Kim demands very much of her body, so injuries will always be there. Serena's injury was just bad luck.
And it's not that different on the ATP tour: Del Potro was out for a year, Nadal is very often injured ...

Petko seems to be doing this.

yeah i know what you mean, no need to shout at me

the game has totally changed (well to me) there's far more emphasis on first serve, second return, players trying to hit winners DTL on the third stroke of the rally, its too much fits and starts, there just isnt enough matches with good rallies and technically the players aren't good enough. you mention 'wooden rackets' would you imagine them today, trying to play with such small faces on the rackets as they did then

its why they call it Soccer and not Football

Is your question about the game being physical or bush Wozniack's abilities to play the game?

The theory is that the game is to physical, many top players struggled in recent time with injuries and that's why a player like Wozniacki despite all of her weaknesses took the chance to climb at the top of the rankings!
