so what's italy's secret of producing one-handed backhand players?

Schiavone, Vinci, Farina-Elia... in a country where most players grew up on clay (unlike Spain with most players play with 2 handed), how did these ladies ended up having one-handed backhands and being so good as well? any thoughts?

Maju terus Tenis Indonesia!

You forgot Brianti. It's not only Italy, but south of Europe, from Greece with Eleni Daniliidou to Spain with Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, with in-between France with Severine Brémond.

Most of these players are around 30 yrs old, except Carla Suarez-Navarro. I guess that they learnt tennis with old teachers who have played tennis with one hand backhand.
Most of tennis teachers who are around 50-60 in South Europa have played with one hand backhand.

On clay, you have to run a lot more than on other surfaces, using one-handed backhand is a great pace saver.

Just a coincidence that some silly buggers can't do it correctly using two hands.

BepaZvonareva Don't read my reps anymore, very relaxing Lydia Ko , Felicity Jones, Emilia Clarke, Rachel Khoo.

Clay is great surface for one handers.. There is time to prepare the shot.. Many great one handers grew up on clay...

No, not a coincidence. Italians and French are cultured and that makes them more prone to be attracted to stylized tennis. And that automatically means 1HBH tennis.

These folks have the best food, best fashion, best looking cars, best music, art, movies... you name it. So it would have been odd if they had favored the inherently ugly two handed "big mac" tennis.

As if an affinity for wine and cheese has anything to do with what backhand a countries tennis professionals use.

I love Schiavone and all the other Italian players but the tennis (esp Schiavone's) is the last thing I would call stylized. Just because it's one handed does not make the shot attractive.

Is there any creature on earth as unfortunate as an ugly woman?

Re: so what's italy's secret of producing one-handed backhand players?

you're half a decade late.
the franco-italian connection.
it's going to die very soon though.
hopefully the club players will help remind the younger generations that tennis isn't built around how many hands you play with, nor is it about power or variety, even - it's outsmarting your opponent, and then executing it - a single handed backhanded, while harder to obtain - allows you the maximum possibilities to hit the ball, and teaches timing and preperation.

if you have nothing important to say, please do so in non-tennis forum. if you have something you think is important, but is actually rubbish regarding anything other than tennis - please do so in the non-tennis forum. if you have something tennis related to say, but it's actually "OMG, X player is so h0t!1" or "who has the biggest boobs on the wtatour" please do so in menstennisforum, under "wta forum". if you have something important, tennis-related and interesting to say please do so. No one in the world can understand how much tennis means to someone, except another fan.

p.s - smashnova, though raised in the soviet union, trained in Italy most of her top years, and was contracted by Lotto.

Re: so what's italy's secret of producing one-handed backhand players?

it's a useless question as none teaches it anymore so even in Italy there won't be any other one handed player

may your choices reflect your hopes not your fears.

Re: so what's italy's secret of producing one-handed backhand players?

Both reasons, the clay thing and the pretencious cultured reason make no sense. Australia had Molik, Pratt, Stubbs, Ferguson, Adamczak a couple years back all with a one-handed backhand. It's a combination of a coincidence and slightly older players.
