Kvitova playing tennis for 'an hour or so' until the age of 16

I was like when i saw that at the age of 16 she played 1hour tennis after school....5 years later she is the one to watch....for example Maria Sharapova started at the age of 4 preparing for real tennis

Quote:
Five years ago she was a schoolgirl who would play tennis for an hour after lessons were over for the day. Today, at the age of just 21, Petra Kvitova is Wimbledon champion, hailed as a force who can lead a change in the world order in the women's game.

Kvitova competes in an age when many champions are nurtured and monitored from their earliest days, like tomato plants in a hot-house. Maria Sharapova, beaten 6-3, 6-4 by the Czech in Saturday's final, started playing tennis aged four, was identified by Martina Navratilova as a special talent at six and moved with her father to Nick Bollettieri's academy in Florida at nine. Visa restrictions and family finances meant the Russian was separated from her mother for the next two years.

Compare that with Kvitova's upbringing in Fulnek, where her father, a former teacher, is the deputy mayor. Nearly 200 miles east of Prague, the town has a population of just 6,000.

And?? Just because most of the tennis players start young, does not always mean you have to. There are so many talented teenagers out there who start later in the game.

Its probably easier to learn technique and proper form when your 4 but i never believed that was the key...to be great you have to have #1) passion....number 2) hard work and patience and 3) killer instinct...none of these skills are dependant on a person age...those are skills you can build as well as skills that are never learned so much as you alread have them in you.

Kvitova abviously didnt need much to get her there.

"There is nothing special there (Note: in Fulnek where Petra lives / comes from)," Kvitova said. "We have four tennis courts, one football ground and a castle. Until I was 16 I only played for an hour or an hour-and-a-half after school. I didn't have any sparring partners. I just played with my two brothers and my parents. I didn't think that I could be a tennis player. My father was my coach until I was 16 or 17. My parents then encouraged me to move to Prostejov, where I saw people like Tomas Berdych practising."

Kvitova ~ Šafářová ~ Garcia ~ Madison Keys

Cetkovská ~ Hradecká ~ Siniaková ~ Gavrilova ~ Bencic ~ Allertova ~ Smitkova ~ Makarova ~ Chakvetadze ~ Laura Robson ~ Pliskova twins

wow some players started tennis at a very young age and reached their peak around their 20s, and by mid-20s they'll usually burnt out by then. Petra only started playing during her teen years and she already won a slam by then. I think her best is yet to come.

To be fair. The Czech system does give her/them a good foundation and the basics (though she was learning in a sleepy small town with her father as coach and her brothers as playing partners).

But absolutely incredible, that she didn't take up the sport in earnest, until 16-17. What's even more crazy, she didn't meet her current coach, David Koytza (he's a good one), till 2.5 years ago.

He said when he met her, that her game was uneven, but her mind, determination and ability to indentify her own desires, skills, weaknesses and goals in tennis were incredible!! He was impressed, and knew she had the mind of a champion.

Just check "articles" in her subforum to read some of them.

Thet's not the point, the point is that if she is at this point playing for fun until 16, imagine where she would be if she would have started to play seriously for example at 10 years, because we all know that talent is important, but practice is equally important especially in tennis where you have adjust your shots till the perfection and this need time! plus she would be probably more fit than she is now.
This means that she can really improve in the next months/years

She'd probably have picked a lot of bad habits. I'm coming to the conclusion that Juniors are a bad school for most players.
