Wimbledon: Dominated by Williams, Graf & Navratilova for 33 years

Wimbledon was dominated in the Open era by a very few players: Navratilova, Graf and the Williams sisters.

Some interesting facts:

- Only 16 different winners in 43 years: King, Jones, Court, Goolagong, Evert, Navratilova, Wade, Graf, Martinez, Hingis, Novotna, Davenport, Sharapova, Mauresmo, Venus and Serena Williams.

- Only 2 different winners than Venus and Serena Williams since 2000: Mauresmo and Sharapova. There was only one final since 2000 without a Williams sister: 2006. That year Serena didn't play because of injury and Venus lost to Jelena Jankovic.

- The tournament was dominated by
Navratilova 9 titles, Graf 7 titles and Venus 5 and Serena 4 titles since 1978. That means 25 titles in the last 32 Championships since 1978 went to one of these four players.

- Only Mauresmo, Sharapova, Davenport, Novotna, Hingis, Martinez, Evert and Goolagong were able to win the title but each of them only once since 1978.

- There were only 5 finals without Navratilova, Graf or the Williams sisters since 1978: 1980, 1981, 1997, 1998 and 2006.

- Record: Navratilova won 9 titles in 12 finals (the last final 1994), she won 6 times in a row between 1982 to 1987 and won 7 doubles titles in 9 finals plus 4 mixed doubles titles in 5 finals. She won the last "official" title in 2003 at the age of 47 (Last year she won the invitation doubles/legends).

So happy to see Sharapova's name in this list. Thats why her Wimbledon triumph was so special.

Amazing from the Williams sisters . This is what makes a player part of the history of the sport, winning slams. Thats why slams are so important in this sport .

So 2 out of these 4 great champions lost in their last Wimbledon final respectively, to some up and coming players.

What will happen to V & S?

Re: Wimbledon: Dominated by Williams, Graf & Navratilova for 33 years

I think it is unfair to exclude King and Evert from that group. King has won Wimbledon 4 times in the Open Era, the same # as Venus. Evert has won 3 Wimbledons but appeared in 10 finals, losing 5 to Navratilova. I would say it is a fab 6, not just a fab 4, which Navratilova and Graf a cut above the rest including the sisters for now.

Some excellent players and/or excellent grass court players have never won Wimbledon. Justine Henin, Hana Mandlikova, Monica Seles, Gabriela Sabatini, Helena Sukova, Pamela Shriver, Tracy Austin, Aranxta Sanchez Vicario, Kimberly Clijsters, Jennifer Capriati. Which speaks to the excellence of those 6 players who have combined to shut such players out of the Wimbledon dream time and time again.

A similar story on the men's side with Borg, Sampras and Federer. Shows that grass tennis is a bit of a different sport. Not much competition if you're good. That makes Wimbledon titles worth less than other Slams.

Re: Wimbledon: Dominated by Williams, Graf & Navratilova for 33 years

Over this era, where Henin won the most FO's, Serena the most AO's, and USO's were fairly well divided, the Wimbledon domination of the William sisters really sticks out.

I'm very interested to see who takes over, or if its like the FO, post-Henin, with a lot of randomness

Kworb is probably someones whose favorite player never won Wimbledon. Or judging by her avatar never won any slams.
