My Gay Gaymes Tennis Update

THis is an update for my friend Darren who doesn't use email:

Today was the first day of tennis in the Gay Gaymes in Sydney. There are 1100 in the tennis event with Open, A, B, C, D and Novice Grades as well as Over 35, 45, 55 and Over 65.

After a struggle in the opening round of the O35 Doubles, my partner and I won 26 63 62 in 90 minutes. On Tuesday I play my first singles, and on Wednesday is my first match in the Mixed. And if anyone else is reading, you may be interested to know that my partner is none other than former Aussie Open Champion Chris O'Neil. A lovely lady and still a great athlete. We are the #3 seeds in our event. She is also in the Open Mixed and the Open Women's Doubles.

My friend Ian lost his 2nd round of the A Grade singles 7-6 6-4 after led 5-2 and 40 love in the first set! Poor boy, he was very upset afterwards.

We are playing our event at the Olympics Games venue (which is the same venue that they play the NSW Open at).

Anyway, it was exciting to win a match and had to share it with someone! LOL

Craig

Can I ask a silly question? Do you have to be gay to play this event? Also how could they verify it? Use their "gaydar"?

U dont have to be gay ... Noone would really know. The event is to promote Gay and Lesbian athletes or something like that, but i doubt theyd let u compete if u brang ur Husband/Wife to the Games!!

Mon53, i know it, you know it you werent 100% . Sorry but if ur were on form im sure u would push the majority of people there. As solid a counter puncher as you get, im sure in these conditions it wouldnormally be even more conducive for u to win .

And i think it was too hot !! i went and played tennis and nearly dropped dead, albeit i was fatigued even b4 i went

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

Monica@53 - what is your name so I can say g'day.... or come and say hi to me. Just ask for Craig (or Frankie Durr - LOL).

No, you don't have to be gay to play in these games. They are all inclusive, which is great. It's all about promoting tolerance and inclusion for all races, sexes, religions etc. A wonderful friendly and peaceful atmosphere. This is what life should be all about.

Yes, it was stinking hot today on the rebound ace courts. I have to say, I didn't find the courts sticky at all. I know there are often complaints about them during Aussie Open time, but I think there is nothing wrong with them. Perhaps on a 40 degree day (which is rare) they could get sticky.

Fave recent players: .. Seles .. Hingis .. Serena .. Venus .. Federer .. Roddick .. Hewitt .. Haas .. Rafter .. Safin .. Radwanska ..
60s/70s: Evonne Goolagong .. Francoise Durr .. Chris Evert .. Margaret Court .. Nancy Richey .. Maria Bueno .. Billie-Jean King .. Lesley Turner .. Virginia Wade .. Ken Rosewall .. Rod Laver .. Bjorn Borg ..
Entertainers: .. Diana Ross .. Dionne Warwick .. Shirley Bassey .. Randy Crawford .. Burt Bacharach .. ABBA .. Woody Allen .. Maggie Smith .. Gena Rowlands .. Judy Davis .. Heath Ledger .. Little Britain ..
Inspiration: .. Jeshua Ben Josepth .. Conversations with God .. Abraham with Esther & Jerry Hicks .. P'taah ..

Steve - well i dunno.... you know, as i said "no excuses" but yeah, it was a hot day, i had a stomach ache, i was tired, i couldn't move my feet, i made so many mistakes, barely got my first serve in, i was nervous and i couldn't adjust to the conditions but you know, it's not really me to complain about it seriously though, i think i got kinda deflated cos i had a break point in the first game of the match and when i couldn't convert, it kind of went downhill and his confidence grew and grew.... i couldn't seem to move the ball around as consistently as i wanted to cos i made a lot of errors very early in the rallies. but he was a really good player and there was nothing i could really attack or exploit in his game at all.

craig - my name is mike (i'm listed as michael in the draw though ). actually i too didn't find the rebound ace courts sticky at all, i was kind of surprised about that actually, but maybe it needs to get into the mid 30's for it to get like that. i dunno if it was the guy's use of heavy spin, my dwarf like stature or the surface but i did find the balls bouncing a touch higher than what i'm used to - my opponent didn't really feed me any balls in my hitting zone and didn't give me any rhythm at all. btw, you are the #10 seed in the O35 draw?

How tough is the competition? NTPR's and stuff... Apart from Chris, are there any other former pro's playing?

Cool. But what do those numbers mean?

In WA, we only go by the N-system. That is N1, N2, N3, N4, etc. How do those other numbers work? Are they assessment ratings?
