During the match today, (it was actually at around 1-6 0-4) sam smith actually said "venus and serena aside, i think wozniaki is the most mentally tough player the game has seen since seles"

now i know Sam has been prone to the odd blunder here and there, but what on earth has she been smoking?? or maybe she's just into danish blondes??

did anyone else watching bbc notice this?

I didn't notice it, but she's clearly a tool.

Wozniacki doesn't have to be mentally tough. Mental toughness is not even in her vocabulary. She can only do one thing, and it's very high percentage. You won't get nervous too often with that sort of game.

She also said "She just can't hit winners, there isn't enough on the ball." Which ofcourse was true in set 1

Thank you. Somebody who has half a brain. Mental toughness is a nice thing to have, but Evonne Goolagong was renowned for her lack of focus, and she won seven slams. Melanie Oudin, if you watch, is a very mentally tough player, but she lacked talent. VASTLY lacked talent.

I would also point out that not showing being mentally broken is not the same thing as BEING mentally broken. In the 2012 Olympic final, Sharapova pretty clearly came in broken. She never put up a fight. Just because the announcers repeat it over and over doesn't make it true.

Sam the Bandwagoner strikes again :spit:
Bingo.

I still disagree with people who call Wozniacki mentally tough. Mental toughness is what Serena and Maria (and Venus perhaps too, earlier in her career) showcase when they NEED to win a point. They try to bring their concentration to the highest level possible and set up an offensive point that they will rarely miss. They show GUTS.

Wozniacki OTOH has loads of perseverance though IMO. She will try to excel in what she does throughout a match regardless of the circumstances and opponent, she'll run her ass off and play it safe all the way. But that doesn't equal raising your game IMO.

Everyone says that Caro is a mentally tough player, and its true. She wouldn't be where she is without a mental game.

And they said Venus and Serena aside... meaning that since Seles, Venus, Serena and Caro are the toughest they have seen.

Wozniacki just needs to somehow develop a bigger game and she'd be winning Slams.

It is a disgrace to Seles to mention her in the same sentence as Wozniaki!!

I think Sam is spot on. The reason Caro has got to #1 is that shes so much better in the head than the rest of the top 10 right now.

Maria used to be so tough but just isn't quite there right now

There is more to mental toughness than just consistency. Mental toughness also requires stepping up in big moments and changing your game when necessary.

Also, it is easier for Caro to be consistent since she has a less risky style of play.

sam was actually a top 60 player in the late ninties and got to the fourth round of wimbledon in 98 or 99!

she was spewing an extra load of bullshit today, she just wanders off on one. she ended up talking about how shes had to give up having a free view box and now only has 5 tv channels so has come to appreciate network tv! this is mid match!
