Cool Lisa Raymond Breaks Down WTA Playing Styles on Clay But Does Not Use Word Pusher

http://www.wtatennis.com/blog/201105...257191_2350985

So here we are at the start of the European red clay season. A nightmare for many of us who did not grow up playing on the dirt and the favorite time of the year for many others who consider the dirt their home court. On the men's side it's almost a foregone conclusion that we will see Rafa holding a trophy over his head a few times over the next month. On the women's side it's a wide open field. Yet for both tours one of the variables on clay that make its eventual champions so unpredictable is the weather.

Clay is the surface most affected by changes in the weather and the conditions surrounding it. A cold, rainy day can make the clay play very slow, bounces seem a lot lower and rallies a lot longer. Heavy conditions like this favor the counterpunchers, players such as The Woz and Radwanska. On a hot sunny day, the clay plays faster and the bounces tend to be higher. These conditions tend to favor the more aggressive, heavier hitters such as Stosur and Azarenka. In Madrid, players are also faced with the challenge of playing in altitude as opposed to the following week in Rome, where this isn't a factor. No other surface relies on mother nature to dictate its playability as much as clay. Will be interesting to see each week who comes away with a title and how the conditions each week favored the winner. If you thought tennis players obsessed about the weather before, wait until the clay court season!

When the surface you play on absorbs moisture readily, obviously the humidity/elevation is going to affect it more than other surfaces. But you'd think they try their best, especially at RG, to keep the courts somewhat similar from day to day, during the tournament atleast.

Wozniak has several nicknames, including "The Woz", "Wonderful Wizard of Woz" and "iWoz" (a reference to the ubiquitous naming scheme for Apple products). "WoZ" (short for "Wheels of Zeus") is also the name of a company Wozniak founded. He is sometimes known as the "Other Steve" of Apple Computer, the better known Steve being co-founder Steve Jobs. He has Polish ancestry.

I thought a big decider of the 2004 FO is that it was very wet, heavy slow conditions when Myskina played Venus. That was the one player, after Anastasia saved match point & beat Sveta, who was playing well enough to give Nastya a match.
It was so slow that Nastya did a lot of hitting down the middle, daring Venus to go for aggressive shots, and that worked.

I dont remember seeing Caro on very slow clay. Wont happen this week. Maybe in Paris.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

All the more reason for clay tournies to start putting roofs on their stadiums. When sealed, and with the conditioning system on, you'd think they could manipulate the clay's playing attributes better.

Azarenka is an aggressive, heavy hitter? She's almost as much of a pusher as Wozniacki.

OMG

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.
