Serena Williams Suffers Pulmonary Embolism

Serena Williams Suffers Pulmonary Embolism

Serena Williams looked stunning at Sunday night's Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party – but, privately, the tennis ace was struggling with a serious health scare that took a dramatic turn on Monday.

Williams, 29, had been spotted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles several times over the past week. When contacted about the visits, Williams's rep, Nicole Chabot, confirmed the athlete's heath status to PEOPLE.

"Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation," the rep says in an exclusive statement.

"Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism [a blood clot in the lungs] which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot."

The rep added, "Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications."
Get better, girl!

How did she get that?? It's a life-threatening condition as far as I know.

Blood clots are dangerous. She should really watch out for those, hopefully the doctors really do monitor her closely.

Get better soon please.

Re: Serena Williams Suffers Pulmonary Embolism

This is a serious medical condition. Fortunately, it sounds like it was diagnosed and treated in time.

"Embolism" implies that the clot formed elsewhere in her body (probably her leg - maybe as a result of wearing that boot for a prolonged period) and traveled to her lung, where it blocked an artery.

Oh, it was just to reply to the poster who said this illness can be quite serious.
I should have quoted the post.

Re: Serena Williams Suffers Pulmonary Embolism

My immediate reaction to this was to note that there was no link and hope that the source was not a good one. But I googled it and it seems it is People magazine, not as good a source as say the New York Times or the BBC but still but still a fairly trusted magazine.

This is alarming to say the least. The implications for Serena's return to professional tennis is not good it must be said. Unfortunately all I or anyone else on this board can do right now is wish Serena the best and hope she makes a complete recovery as quickly as possible and is then able to continue with her tennis career.

Should be the case, can't think of anything else. The inactivity of her foot (because of the boot) must have caused the formation of that clot.
