What match made you become a tennis fan?

When thinking about how womens tennis can becme more popular, i thought how and why i fell in love with womens tennis. One thing that sticks in my mind that turned me from casual fan to crazy is the serena vs seles match from canada in 2001. It was 2 champions going toe to toe, there was respect but also fierce competitiveness and above all such intensity and great tennis.

I had never intended to watch the match i just stumbled upon it late at night as it was about to start live. I had watched a few other matches, hingis at AI that year i think (such a gorgeous tournament was the impression) as well as slam matches over the few years before 2001.

I was sold on womens tennis that night, i instantly became a seles fan and my respect for serena as a player was very high. I taped the highlights the next day and i wore that tape out.

When i think about womens tennis today, would i have fallen in love with the sport had i watched the Caro vs Vera final from doha? I think not. The atmosphere from (i think it was toronto that year) was just electric. Seles was loved and the crowd was just adding to what was an amazing match.

I think no matter how much womens tennis is promoted, or the sexiness of Sharapova or Caro ect, the bottom line is and will always be great champions playing great tennis against each other, making great rivalries.

Also i would be intrested if any of the new danish posters fell in love with tennis because of it being the wonderful sport it can be, or if they became fans because of Caro's rise to world number 1? Or similar with Sharapova, whether they became fans because of the name or her supposed hotness or actual matches she played?

I am sure similar threads have been made, but with the thread about improving the popularity of the game i wondered about some of the new posters and why they became fans?

Re: What match made you become a tennis fan?

the first tennis tournament i watched was AO 2010. i didn't mean to watch it either, i just stumbled upon it after whimsically flipping to the tennis channel. the match that was on at the moment was azarenka vs williams. crazy match. i knew nothing about tennis and i was like how does the score work? etc etc. i got to see jie play against henin but the memory is very vague.. perhaps i wiped it from my memory after how bad she played anyway, that certainly didn't turn me on to tennis.

there really hasn't been one match that turned me onto tennis. i think i just gradually i realized that i really like little jie. if little jie were to retire i would probably stop watching tennis. the only matches i really watch/care for anyway are the ones that she's in

Yeah... I agree with you.
To answer your questions: ...I forgot about this one... but I remember it was Wimbledon. And Navratilova was in it. Against Steffi or Conchita? I'm not sure

For the women, Hana Mandlikova d Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in the semis and final of the US Open 1985.

For the men, Miloslav Mecir d Boris Becker in the semis of the US Open 1986. The Mecir match especially left a huge impression on me as to the kind of game I like and it has lasted until this day.

It was horrible seeing Llendl kick Miloslav's ass the next day too but I suppose it prepared me for getting used to seeing my faves lose, something I have done a lot of over the years.

Re: What match made you become a tennis fan?

The two tennis matches that really got me into Tennis were the Australian Open Final 2007, and the Venus vs Maria clash in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2007.

I'd been following Serena through the tournament, fortunately for me, I was spared the terrifying ordeal of watching the Peer match, as I was unable to get around to watching it that day. After that though, I followed Serena's match against Vaidisova, and finally her awesome display in the final.

Venus's fourth round clash against Maria also really made me become even more of a fan of the sport. The athleticism and determination she showed, and the fact that she was the under dog, seeded somewhere in the 20's just made me root for her even more.

now you are the kind of person i wanted to ask, what did you think of vika the 1st time you saw her? for me i would say she is hard to watch and i cant imagine many people becoming fans through watching one of her matches?

Hingis, in her last Australian Open title run in 1999. And some Sampras&Aggasi matches. I always rooted for Pete S. Not sure why

Re: What match made you become a tennis fan?

It's hard to say. I don't think one match made me a fan. Steffi Graf made me a fan. The first Major I got to see her win was the 1991 Wimbledon classic against Gabriela Sabatini. EPIC!
