What match made you become a tennis fan?
When thinking about how womens tennis can becme more popular, i thought how and why i fell in love with womens tennis. One thing that sticks in my mind that turned me from casual fan to crazy is the serena vs seles match from canada in 2001. It was 2 champions going toe to toe, there was respect but also fierce competitiveness and above all such intensity and great tennis.
I had never intended to watch the match i just stumbled upon it late at night as it was about to start live. I had watched a few other matches, hingis at AI that year i think (such a gorgeous tournament was the impression) as well as slam matches over the few years before 2001.
I was sold on womens tennis that night, i instantly became a seles fan and my respect for serena as a player was very high. I taped the highlights the next day and i wore that tape out.
When i think about womens tennis today, would i have fallen in love with the sport had i watched the Caro vs Vera final from doha? I think not. The atmosphere from (i think it was toronto that year) was just electric. Seles was loved and the crowd was just adding to what was an amazing match.
I think no matter how much womens tennis is promoted, or the sexiness of Sharapova or Caro ect, the bottom line is and will always be great champions playing great tennis against each other, making great rivalries.
Also i would be intrested if any of the new danish posters fell in love with tennis because of it being the wonderful sport it can be, or if they became fans because of Caro's rise to world number 1? Or similar with Sharapova, whether they became fans because of the name or her supposed hotness or actual matches she played?
I am sure similar threads have been made, but with the thread about improving the popularity of the game i wondered about some of the new posters and why they became fans?
