Post Should there be a ranking limit to players entering events?

Not meaning to bag Monica this is not the point of this topic I think she is a great champion and always will be. I Just feel a little sorry for some of the lower ranked players.

They enter the lower ranked events because that is what level of play they are at and are often unable to compete in higher tier events. Is it fair on these players if a top 10 player decides to enter these events to maintain a ranking through a few easy wins?

Should there be a cut off ranking to prevent higher ranked players from entering these events? What everyones thoughts?

A top ten player doesn't play a Tier IVB or a Tier V for points. They don't enough for that. They do enter for match play, however. A top ten player won't stay top ten long playing Tier V's.

Because the Chase is being played in Munich this year Monica will not be participating, losing a ton of points.

Filderstadt is in Germany, so she is not playing there either.

1 of the Asisan tournaments that Monica has played is part of her Sponsership deal.

The others are to try and gain some pointss to off-set the loss she will suffer at Munich.

These are Tournaments she would probably rather not play, but she also doesn't want to start the new season outside the top 10, so props to her for doing what she needs to do.

But the lower ranked players do enter these events for points. For a player who can't normally make it into a higher tier event because of their ranking and faces say Monica Seles in the first round of the event. Is that fair on that player?

I understand that a top 10 player wont stay a top 10 for long playing these tournaments but i couldn't care less. It is the lower ranked players that I sympathise with.

Also understand why Monica isn't playing in Europe. I doubt i would play if i was her either. Not bashing Monica at all, she is fantastic.

Maybe she went over there for the Chinese food.

Actually, the reason is because she likes playing in Asia more than she does in Europe.

I've not been around much, but from what I've read here and there, I am finding the "big debate" over Monica playing Shanghai a bit tiresome.

Thanks Adrian for a very succinct answer.
I'll just add that sponsors and tourney officials are THRILLED when a marquee player comes to their event. As for feeling sorry for the lower ranked players...it's a sport, folks. The idea of putting some kind of ranking cap on who can enter what tier is ridiculous.

I could say more, but I guess that's sufficient.

In answer to the question: No, pure and simple.

Adrian and earthcrystal gave excellent expo's on why.

Well said EC and Adrian . I agree with you guys but I LUV it when they lose to someone they shouldn't and someone unexpected gets alot of juicy bonus pts

eg Germana di Natale beating Mary Pierce 2000 Strasbourg , but Mary went onto win RG two weeks later . Germana got the headlines and alot of BP not that it did much good .... she's now ranked around 350

Good luck to my favs

This tournament may produce a similar shock result TBE, the further Alicia molik is progressing the better she is looking, with that huge Serve (which becomes more accurate with confidence) and wonderful Groundies, if she was to meet Monica in the final, she may make Monica feel this isn't a Tier iv after all

holy effing shit, does it EVER
even if our jeffie wins, talladega blows. it's like mcenroe said, "the only thing 'championships' about wimbledon is its prestige." same can be said about daytona and talladega.
