Best Height for Tennis?

I was bored, so I looked up the heights of everyone in the top 50. While nothing is ironclad, I think most people might be surprised at just how strict the height requirements are to be a top level tennis player.

top 10

5-3-
5-4-
5-5-
5-6-x
5-7-
5-8-xx
5-9-xx
5-10-xxx
5-11-x
6-0-
6-1-x
6-2-

top 20

5-3-
5-4-
5-5-
5-6-xx
5-7-xx
5-8-xxxx
5-9-xxx
5-10-xxxxx
5-11-x
6-0-
6-1-xx
6-2-x

top 50

5-3-x
5-4-x
5-5-xxxx
5-6-xxxxx
5-7-xxxxxx
5-8-xxxxxxx
5-9-xxxxxx
5-10-xxxxx
5-11-xxxxxxxxx
6-0-xxx
6-1-xx
6-2-x

-The height requirements for the top 10 are pretty strict. If you are shorter than 5-8 you generally aren't strong enough. Taller than 5-11 and you're too slow. It takes exceptional athleticism or shot making ability to overcome this.
-The top 50 is a little more relaxed, but just about every girl on tour is taller than the average woman's height of 5'4".
-The gap between 5'11 and 6'0" might be because some girls are reluctant to call themselves 6 feet tall.
-If you are a junior girl who is under 5'5" or over 6'0", don't think of tennis as an investment, because it probably will not pay off.

Re: Best Height for Tennis?

Tennis players are about the same height as models. Models are much lighter though lol

The best women's tennis players in the last 20 years are generally 5'7" and above. (Ju is of course the exception)

The best men's are around 6'0"-6'3".

Most of the world would measure in centimeters, not feet and inches. Even among those that do use feet and inches, most professional female athletes would not find it embarrassing to be 6 feet tall.

Re: Best Height for Tennis?

What's the point, the heights that you give are based on the profiles from the WTA site, right? everyone knows they are mostly wrong...

Lucie ''Lucka'' Safarova, Petra ''KvittyGoat'' Kvitova, Sabine ''BoomBoom Bine'' Lisicki

The point is that the height range to have the best chance at success is narrower than most people would guess.
Also, being very tall is a disadvantage. The more over 6 feet you are the less likely you will succeed. Most people know that short girls tend to fail, but they aren't as aware of the height disadvantage.

As for the reported heights, they aren't that far off. If the height errors are random then it would not change the conclusions.

Soon we'll have in tennis 6'3 girls like this:

Actually I saw the match of the girl above on clay and I haven't seen worse clay court moving than hers

The perfect tennis body is Venus Williams. Tall with reach but still fast. She probably has the best tennis body in the history of the game but too bad her tennis is so erratic.

Re: Best Height for Tennis?

177 cm

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.
