Schiavone vs Kuznetsova was no longer than an average men's 5-setter

Why are commentators so focused on pointing out how tired Francesca is after that match, when ATP players routinely (well, not routinely, but often enough) play 5-set matches in Slams, come back after a rest day and win their next round?

Francesca is very very fit. There was no need to turn her match against Wozniacki into a pity party. Schiavone showed that, like the men, she is tough enough to play a 5-setter and come back roaring to go in the next round. Too bad she didn't win it.

Its probably because of Fran's age. I expect Wozniacki to play 5 hours then play 5 hours the next night.
Men do that USO SF & F, they can play 10 hours of high quality in 2 days

Men are physically superior to females, it's science, no need to argue that. Most of the womens draw would be gone if the WTA played 5 setters.

Francesca's passion for the game overrides her fatigue, it's something that we all love to watch and is very inspirational.

:awww: I love Fran.

Well for starters Fransexa is a woman and she does a lot more running and scrambling than any ATP player in the same time frame. Men also are not robots - Isner was dead on his feet in his next match after beating Mahut and was trashed thoroughly. And his game mainly consists of huge serves and putaways.
Nalbandian :spit:

Fran > Fat Dave

still not enough for the Djoker last year... and had Fed known it was going to rain, maybe he wouldn't have felt the need to tank sets to save energy for the final...

Verdasco and Nadal's epic 5 setter semifinal at the '09 AO was I think 5 hours and 14 minutes and it was the longest match in AO history. This match was only about half an hour less than that, so this match was definitely longer than most 5-setters.

This. Men's matches that go to 5 are usually around 3-3.5 hours, about 40 minutes a set on average.

But the other thing with Schiavone's 16-14 3rd set, is that a set like that is really psychologically exhausting. Much more than a men's 5th set that might be 6-4 or 7-5. There were a good 90 minutes of really mentally intense tennis that those two players went through, which is also exhausting.

The other thing is that men are conditioned and half-expect to play lengthy matches. Women players would never expect to play for nearly five hours and would never train for it.

you have to consider she is 30, and that her game is reaaly defensive, i think she ran at least 1/3 more than sveta in her match, plus she is not a man (despite what someone say on this forum), and finally in her post match interview she said that she could have run for other 5 km after the match with wozniacki and she thinks she did't loose for tiredness but because she did't take her chances

fitness wise, then again it was a joke ( see the post before mine ? )... never compare men and women anyway.

Men have better fitness than women(even though Fran acts and looks like a man), plus Fran is already 30. If Fatbandian, a man, had to retire in a match tired after playing a 5-setter 2 days before, you'd fully expect Schiavone to be fatigued as well:shrug:

So? The physical toll is just one part of the equation. Do you know how taxing it is mentally to keep hanging in there, save matchpoints etc? That is why Djokovic looked spent even 2 days after the end of the USO semi that was under 4 hours and had at least 2 easy sets.

Shes past 30, played for almost 5 fucking hours and had some long matchs even before that, throw in a dodgy thigh too.

Quite honestly it wouldnt surprise me a single bit if Fran did more running than Isner did in his long match. Probably not Mahut though.
