Why Is Peng Pronounced Pong?

Eurosport commentators kept calling Peng Pong. If Peng is pronounced Pong, what would it be if she was Pong? Ping, Pang, Peng, Pung? Or were the commentators just getting it wrong? If they were then it's not a good sign that they don't know the players' names!

Re: Why Is Peng Pronounced Pong?

It's not. It's sort of a mix between Peng and Pung, said with a rising tone.

Why is "Clijsters" pronounced "Claysters"? Same reason I guess..foreign names are unfamiliar to those who aren't from that country so we just read it as we think it is..

Scroll to 4:50. The e in Zheng (Jie) is pronounced like the fourth one () and the e in Peng (Shuai) is pronounced like the second one ().

Re: Why Is Peng Pronounced Pong?

There's no 'Pung' syllable in Mandarin, as far as I know of. So just Peng. Not Penguin though.

Re: Why Is Peng Pronounced Pong?

Yeah I noticed the Eurosport commentators calling her 'Pong' I also heard one of them referring to Kvitova as something that sounded more like 'Klitova' by the end of the match lol

AO Radio commentators have been bad at pronouncing the names too!! (You'd think none of these had ever called a tennis match in their lives or even heard of the names before...)

Re: Why Is Peng Pronounced Pong?

Peng is probably said most accurate when pronouncing the word "Ping" with a NZ accent.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

It's not easy to find an equivalent for a sound like "Peng" in English

Re: Why Is Peng Pronounced Pong?

I have been studying Mandarin Chinese for two years now, great to see some people interested in a correct pronuncation of her name.

Although English commentars also tend to pronounce everything just like in English, we Germans tend to pronounce it the way it really is (for example Mahut would be pronounced so different in German, but we still say it the French way or at least close to it, and English native speakers hardly adapt.

Worst one in Grges though, that r.
