Cornet: What went wrong, and can she salvage her career?

Coming into the 2009 season, 18 year old Alize Cornet was ranked 16th in the world going into the Australian Open. She was on track with the other top players of her age, like Wozniacki, Azarenka, Cibulkova, etc. At Melbourne, Cornet held two match points against Safina in the fourth round, but ended up falling in three sets. This performance propelled her to a career high ranking of 11 (I think at one point she was a win from top 10?). After this, things all fell apart for Cornet. She only reached the second round twice in her next seven grand slams. As a result, her 2010 ranking ended at 70. She had her best Grand Slam result since 2009, with a R3 here in Melbourne. This makes me wonder,

1. What happened to Cornet? Her immediate results after the '09 weren't bad. Once she hit Miami, it seems like the wheels really fell off.

2. Do you think she can salvage her career? Maybe she'll never be on the brink of top 10, but top 20-30 range?

She overachieved.

Her results post-AO '09 suit her actual tennis talent better than being on the verge of top 10.

Re: Cornet: What went wrong, and can she salvage her career?

I don't know too much about her, but I did see some of her match today with Kim. Honestly, I don't think she has the weapons to really make it into the top 20 let alone the top 10. She doesn't have a lot of power on either FH or BH, and the speed is average. The winner count was very low for her. Even though Kim was making mistake after mistake she didn't win any break points with winners. She was just given them because of Clijsters errors. Also, she seems to get frusrated very quickly which isn't going to help her get to the top. She seems like a top 50-70 player for most of her career.

She's working hard. Salvage her career? Bit dramatic, no?

Re: Cornet: What went wrong, and can she salvage her career?

The problem is that she lost her confidence somewhere along the way. If I recall correctly, she has a fairly atrocious record against top 20 opponents for someone who was ranked 11. She only has a handful of career top 20 wins.

We've seen other girls stuck in the same position - beating lower ranked opponents only to come up short against anyone with a higher ranking - and it can take its toll. When you don't have many weapons and rely on wearing your opponent down or killing them with consistency ala Wozniacki, you need to be mentally tough and very self-assured. Cornet just doesn't have the mental strength or belief to get her over the line in close matches anymore (even the ones she should be winning), but I do agree she overachieved in her prime.

I can only answer to the first one. She had a shoulder injury at the beginning of 2009. Instead of taking a break, she overplayed and eventually lost confidence.

Thanks for the insight. I was wondering if maybe she had some injury, but couldn't find anything about it.

The atrocity that just took place between Her and Kim not withstanding, I think she is on the right path again. Hoping she can be back in the top 30 by the end of the year.

I saw her play and I can't believe she made it to #11. She is #51 at best and that's being generous.

Re: Cornet: What went wrong, and can she salvage her career?

alize is working hard, and if she plays like in the previous rounds, she can do some good this year and re-enter the top 50

Alize Cornet- Agi Radwanska- Caro Wozniacki

Slava Shvedova- Bel Bencic- Alize Lim
