What happened to Sharapova's swinging volley?

Ever since she came back from her shoulder injury, she seemed to have retired that shot, perhaps because she thinks the swinging volley will re-ignite her shoulder injury. But I feel that retiring this shot is one of the key reasons why her game has never come back to its pre-injury greatness. Without this shot, she cannot pile the pressure on her opponents like she used to, since the opponents now know they can just dik the shot back for the rally to be set to neutral again. Maria can theoretically use the conventional volley instead, but we know she's such a joke at the net.

Overall, in my opinion, retiring the shot has put more pressure on her ground game, making her either go for too much, or just trying to keep the ball in play, and she still hasn't found the right balance between the two. It could also explain her second serve woes, in addition to lack of confidence, also perhaps going for the big one because she doesn't want to get absorbed in rallies she is definitely winning less often than in the past.

What do you guys think?

I think you haven't watched much of her matches if you think she doesn't use that volley anymore. Her problem now is serve and all the other problem derive from it - she can't dictate her service games like she used to (often with a help of swinging volley too) and she is forced to desperate baseline grinding, where she often nets the ball while being rushed.

^^

It's definitely way less. Nowadays she'll rather let the short ball bounce and hit it, rather than take it out in the air via a swinging volley. I may not have watched much of her matches, but I definitely feel she is not using it when the chance arises.

Maria does not even get as many opportunities to execute this shot due to nearly every facet of her game being in ruin.

Re: What happened to Sharapova's swinging volley?

First of all, she uses the swinging volley even on potential overheads presumably to protect her shoulder (she was doing this back in 2007-08 as well), and it is still her default volley. The reason she hits it less is because she dominates way fewer rallies overall these days.

She's not dominating the forecourt with her serve and first strike tennis like she did in the past. Confidence also plays a part.

This and this.

The swing volley is still very much a vital part of her game, but when you can't get to the forecourt and be aggressive, obviously, you won't get many chances to hit it.

Re: What happened to Sharapova's swinging volley?

I think it's all about confidence. I mean she don't hit those swing volleys anymore because she does not trust herself enough, she's affraid to miss it. You need confidence to execute those shots. Let the short ball bounce is much more secure.

Re: What happened to Sharapova's swinging volley?

I have noticed, for palyers who have this shot in their repertoire, the older they get, the more cautious they become using this shot.

I think the landing is often hazardous to their knees and ankles.

I can't recall the last time I have seen Venus use this authoritatively.
She has become very hesitant and less confident when she plays this shot.
