The AO 2011: Weakest ever?

I'm trying not to be a WTA basher here, but.. we are about to go into a slam where:

The #1 and #2 seeded players have no slams to their name, and only a combined 5 semi finals? Both lost extremely convicingly in warm up tournaments.

And the undisputed best player of the generation and queen of the AO is absent.

With regards to other WTA stars:
Venus: has never done well here (by her standards), and is ageing.
Henin: is not what she was, and the Hopman cup was not promising.
Sharapova: is a complete mess.
Kuznetsova: can surprise us, but certainly doesn't seem brilliant recently.
Ivanovic: has been up and down for 2 years and now has an injury.
Azarenka: is still a rookie to the latter stages of slams, and suffers from high temperatures?
Jankovic: is out of sorts and could lose to anybody.

I'm kinda starting to think Stosur might be a really good bet with the crowd behind her.

Without Clijsters, the tour would be a disaster. Thinking it over, it really makes you wonder whether Dementieva was right to retire... she easily could've taken a slam in 2011.

Regrettably a life long fan of Ana Ivanović

So what did you call USOpen 2010, when both Justine and Serena were out?

Well I thought that at least then Wozniacki looked pretty convincing and most other players weren't completely out of it... but yeh that wasn't great either.

RG '08, '09 and especially '10 were all much worse.

Did you actually watch Hopman Cup?

I understand where you're coming from.

But based on past tournaments, it never seemed like seedings mattered that much.
I dunno, but often AO is quite interesting to me because there's some dark horse that emerges from the pack.

Whatever happens, it definitely won't be worse than 2006

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

Vs. Molik and Ana yes... despite winning 4 matches I didn't think Justine was that great.

In terms of quality coming into the tournament RG 08 was pretty good. If it wasn't for Henin's 'retirement' a few weeks before it would've been a great line up.

I'm not dissing her But by Venus' standards that's not great.

Re: The AO 2011: Weakest ever?

It's no worse than a lot of other recent majors, like people have mentioned.
It's hard to say who has form based on the last 2 weeks.
We're going to find out who's in form as they get to week 2.

I thought there were some very good points in the Kim-Vera & Alisa-Domi matches.
You'll see some good tennis

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

Re: The AO 2011: Weakest ever?

Blah blah blah... It's going to be a mess, and it would be great if neither Kimberly or Christine wins this, otherwise the final would be SOOOOOO boring...

Hopefully a young player could step up there, or Venus!!!

Stosur will never win anything important off clay.

Re: The AO 2011: Weakest ever?

If I tried, I could link you to worst ever threads to every slam for the past 3 years.

And lord, 30/20/15/10/5 years ago there were seeds struggling before and or during slams. It isn't new. Just because players you don't like or approve of are at the top of the game or upsetting your faves doesn't equate to tennis apocalypse.
