If you want to win a Slam, don't win the lead-up event 1 week before

If you want to win the AO, don't win Sydney. If you want to win Wimby, don't win Eastbourne. And if you want to win the USO, don't win Newhaven. (FO hasn't historically had a major lead-up event held 1 week before)

On memory, I can recall only 2 times in the last 12 years when a lead-up winner went on to claim the following GS:

Venus Williams '00 USO
Justine Henin '04 AO.

All these 'dont win a tournament before a slam' statistics have been influenced mainly by 2 players. It doesn't necessarily apply to the rest imo.

hmm i don't particularly agree. "professionals" come out after 1-2 days rest and play the exact same way and even better in some cases (that will also depend on fitness of that particular player-each player is individual). Also the experience in matches can only be a good thing i suppose

So if Kim doesn't win Sydney at least we know why.

Fair enough, that applies to Eastbourne since the Williams have never played it. But Serena has played Sydney a bunch of times without winning it.

Thats what I am saying, Serena has influenced this statistic (whether it be at AO or at Wimbly or at USO) quite heavily along with Venus (at Wimbledon). Just because they can win Grandslams without being 'in-form' during the build-up doesn't mean the rest can too. It also depends on your age, if you are young enough, your body and mind can manage to be at its best for a longer stretch of time.

If you want to do well at a Slam, win the lead-up event?

Here are the Sydney winners from the last 20 years and in brackets, how they fared at the Australian Open.

With the exception of 4 winners, the rest all reached the quarterfinals or better.

2010 - Dementieva (Round 2)
2009 - Dementieva (Semifinal)
2008 - Henin (Quarterfinal)
2007 - Clijsters (Semifinal)
2006 - Henin (Final)
2005 - Molik (Quarterfinal)
2004 - Henin (Winner)
2003 - Clijsters (Semifinal)
2002 - Hingis (Final)
2001 - Hingis (Final)
2000 - Mauresmo (Round 2)
1999 - Davenport (Semifinal)
1998 - Sanchez Vicario (Quaterfinal)
1997 - Hingis (Winner)
1996 - Seles (Winner)

1995 - Sabatini (Round 1)
1994 - Date (Semifinal)
1993 - Capriati (Quaterfinal)
1992 - Sabatini (Semifinal)
1991 - Novotna (Final)
1990 - Zvereva (Round 2)

It's difficult to win back to back events, let alone 12 straight matches...

Seles was unbeaten in all the Australian tournaments till 1998 Shame she never played in Sydney in her peak years.

Novotna won Eastbourne then Wimbledon in 1998....another example. She was pretty much unbeatable on grass that year

Venus did it twice, 2000 and 2001 US Open.

You could also make a case that if you want to win slams don't win any other tournaments period! That stat applies to her majesty Serena who has 4 slams in her last 5 title haul, YEC being the exception.

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

Tell that to Navratilova won 9 Wimbledon titles and 7 out of these 9 times, she won Eastbourne the week before.

A better thread would be that great form in lead-up tournaments does not necessarily coincide with championship form at the slam.
I believe there's such a thing as peaking too early.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

Re: If you want to win a Slam, don't win the lead-up event 1 week before

If you can remember 2000 USO, why not remember 2001 USO?

Plus, this stat is incredibly misleading given that Henin, Venus, and Serena have been the ones stacking up on all the slams and they rarely play the week before a slam (recently). Henin before Wimbledon is the only exception and we know how many slams she has there.
