Re: Wozniacki will be ITF player of the year

With the Beijing win, she'll get the ITF player of the year--they definitely value #1 spot > GS wins. No way Serena's getting it after being AWOL half the year.

Maybe they dont want to give it to someone who doesnt play Fed Cup all year.
Myskina won for 2004

Except finishing 2008 season at #1 Jelena Jankovic also played that season GS final (+SFx2) and reach #1 for the first time already in August, and Serena in 2008 won only one slam.

This season Wozniacki only once reach GS SF and Serena won two slams, so Serena is bold favorite
For me personally #1 alternate for Serena is actually Kim Clijsters, but she must win YEC together with GS-USO and two-weeker Miami. Or even Schiavone if wins YEC and FED CUP at end is more close than Wozniacki. Since this ITF Champion award exist (over 30 years) Jelena Jankovic in 2008 and Martina Hingis in 2000 is only slamless, but both at least reach GS final that season (+2xSF), so I don't think that year ending #1 will be enough for Wozniacki at all. BTW that 2000 award for Hingis is by far most controversial (not JJ/2008), because Venus won 2 slams and Olympic gold that year.

and I'm not even fan of Ana Ivanovic... just an objective observer who realize how perfect she is

AMAZING BELGRADE MIRACLE: In just three years (2008-2011) 5 different players born in same city reach world #1 in rankings and several GS titles and finals (WTA singles: Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, ATP singles: Novak Djokovic, ATP doubles: Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor... with notable performances of Bojana Jovanovski, Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki which is also all three born in Belgrade)

As far as i know Hingis did not get that award in 2000. It was Venus.

Anyway Hingis was robbed either in 1998 or 1999, when she had better performances in grand slams that Davenport, add to that she won the YEC in 1998 over Davenport, but Davenport won the YEC 1999 over Hingis, but Hingis was the one with 3 slam finals.. so in any of those two years Hingis should have been the best player. Davenport ended 98 as number one by a slim margin less than 300 points and Hingis ended 99 as number one with more than 1200 points..

Hingis got theitf award in 97,99 and 2000.ITf is obsessed with no1.They usually go for whoever ends as no1 regardless of major results. I can guarantee you wozniacki will get it this year.

I agree on 1998 but not on 1999. In 1998 I think they were too swayed by Davenport's completely dominant summer run where she domianted everyone each tournament including Hingis. In 1999 however I would have gone with Davenport. Yeah Hingis had 3 slam finals but at the US Open Davenport lost in the semis to Serena and Hingis the final, so I dont really consider that doing any better. And lets face it, Davenport would have had probably won had they played in the semis (or final). Davenport did well in all the slams, she had a win, semis, semis, quarters, and the only lose that wasnt to the eventual winner was the semifinal loss to Mauresmo in Australia. Hingis had a pathetic showing at Wimbledon where she got crushed 6-2, 6-0 by Jelena Dokic in the 1st round. So for me that already more than balances out the slams between them and makes it even. Add to that Davenport's big win at the YEC where she thumped Hingis and I give her the edge overall. And Hingis didnt beat Davenport in a head to head encounter all year either.

It was Hingis. But Hingis actually had a ridiculous 2000. Nine singles titles, five Tier I's (TPP, Miami, Montréal, Zürich, Moscow), the Tour Championships in singles and doubles, AND a slam final, plus two slam semis and a QF. She didn't just get it because she had the #1 ranking.

She may or may not get the award, but very few people believe she's actually the best player. (In my own subjective universe she #4, after Serena, Clijsters and Zvonareva.) Mind you, she earned and deserves the #1, and all the goes with it. That simply isn't the same as being the best.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Re: Wozniacki will be ITF player of the year

ITF player of the year doesn't mean anything these days. What matters is if you finish #1 in the rankings. I mean it's so typical of the ITF to award Woz just the day after Serena says that she's out for the rest of the season. How tacky.
