More injuries: Mauresmo pulls out of Swisscom

More proof the season is too long?

Mauresmo pulls out of Swisscom Challenge with sore knee

October 17, 2002

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- World No. 4 Amelie Mauresmo pulled out of the Swisscom Challenge with a sore knee Thursday.

Cartilage in a knee was inflamed, a chronic problem that recurs when Mauresmo is tired, said her coach Loic Courteau. He said she also had a stiff neck.

The third-seeded Frenchwoman had received a first-round bye and was to play her first match Thursday against Patty Schnyder.

Mauresmo reached the semifinals at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon this year, and Courteau said she did not want to endanger her chances of competing in the season-ending WTA Championships starting Nov. 4 in Los Angeles.

No way! What is with the neck, didn't she get a bad neck earlier this year or last year? They're dropping like flies!

Don't know about last year but she certainly had a bad neck earlier this year. Hmmmm it might have been in Rome? I'd need to check, but that time of year IIRC.

Too bad : I was expecting a superb match Mauresmo-Schnyder on Eurosport this evening.
But Amelies withdrawing might be a good news for Daniela Hantuchova... if she beats Dementieva.

I wouldn't say this was proof the season was too long since Mauresmo is a player who carefully plans her season so she doesn't play too often.

I think the season should be 52-weeks, but with no requirements for top players to have to play all year. So players could pick and choose when they want time off.

Mirjana Lucic : Australian Open doubles champ and back in Top 100

Jelena Jankovic : US Open finalist 2008 and World No. 1

Jennifer Capriati : 3 Grand Slams, Olympic Gold and World No.1

Rafael Nadal : 10 Grand Slams, Olympic Gold and World No.1

I agree - she's not known to over-schedule. (you could shorten the season all you want - some people will still find a way to play more than is healthy for them)

I'm disappointed, but I'm glad she's taking care of the knee.

So ... is she going to be in LA? I get the feeling that it isn't that serious. Yes?

If I had to guess, I'd say she'll play LA.

Get well soon Amelie!

She had the knee mri'd this summer when they found the cyst. My understanding is that it's managable (at least for now), but will flair up now and again. Whether she goes to LA probably depends on how soon she recovers.

As for her neck - geez, Momo, bring your own pillow on the road with you or something

Mauresmo was replaced by Lucky Loser Elena Bovina. A Bovina-Hantuchova matchup would be verrrrry interesting. I'd love to see that. They both have to win today to set it up though.

And how was it that Momo hurt her neck earlier this year?

(Griff, is that a SwissAir ticket?)

Get well soon, Amelie! Looking forward to some major Momojo in LA.

Get better Mauresmo

I don't see why people think the season is to long, it's the players responsibility to dictate and make reasonably commitments through out the year, It wouldn't matter if there was 1000 tournaments in a year, the player has the responsibiliy to decide.
