Re: Budapest R1: Anna Chakvetadze def. Mariya Koryttseva 62 60
Anna played pretty well, it was a convincing win.
I'm glad that Anna has gone back to moving the ball around the court instead of just an all-out aggressive strategy that she was employing a couple of years ago. Initially, I found Anna's ballstriking to be rather tentative and it really got her in trouble. Mariya, clearly was going to be the aggressor and take charge of points, and when she has the time to go for her shots, she can be dangerous. However, once Anna put Mariya on the move just that little bit, it was advantage Anna. Mariya's movement is piss poor.
After holding and consolidating the break, Anna was executing so much better and there were signs of vintage Chakvetadze. She was opening up the courts with angles, moving the ball around the court, and creating opportunities for herself to be aggressive, it was nice to see.
And of course a couple of drop shots from inches behind the baseline
It didn't help that Mariya couldn't hold serve to save her life
but Anna was returned great. I loved to see her take such an aggressive stance when returning. She was right on top of the baseline on first serves and a couple of inches inside the baseline on second serves
Obviously, ChakAttack is going to have to step it up even more against ClayGOAT Dulgheru. But I think she has a good shot if she's willing and is executing her game well. Come on, Anna!
