Very surprising how well the Czechs did at Wimbledon and elsewhere:
Petra Kvitova: Never won a match at Wimbledon prior, now in the Rd. of 16. Knocked off #23 seed, former Wimbledon semifinalist Jie Zheng, #14 seed and former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Vika Azarenka. Projected Top 50 after Wimbledon.
Klara Zakopalova: Won one match at Wimbledon prior, in 2004, now in the Rd of 16. Took out #18 seed Aravane Rezai, and #10 seed Flavia Pennetta, knocking her out of WTA Top 10. Projected Top 50 after Wimbledon.
Barbie S-Z: Reached the 3rd Rd, matching her best performance at a Slam, which came at Wimbledon in 2008. Took out former #24 seed and former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Dani Hantuchova in the 2nd round. Now projected rank of #52 (career high) after Wimbledon. Although knocked out of singles by Masha Sharapova, Barbie is still in doubles with Iveta Benesova as the #12 seeds.
Andrea Hlavackova: Qualified into her first Slam main draw at Wimbledon and won her first Slam match by taking advantage of her amazing draw: two Brits in qualifying, then WC and Wimbledon junior champ Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in the first round. Projected new career high ranking of #113.
Petra Cetkovska: Petra, who was Top 50 two years ago, but has since fallen to #245
, started to make tiny steps to a comeback by winning the 25K Perigueux, France on clay, knocking off the #3, #4, #5 seeds. Hope to see her back at US Open qualifying.
