Serena Williams for Perth
By DIGBY BEACHAM

13oct02

EXPLOSIVE world No. 1 Serena Williams will spearhead the US challenge at the Hopman Cup.

In a spectacular coup for the mixed teams championship, to be staged at the Burswood Dome from December 28-January 4, Williams' appearance will be officially announced at the Cup launch in Perth on Tuesday.

The signing of Williams, along with Australia's reigning Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt, ensures the event will boast, for the first time, both world No. 1 players.

It means this Hopman Cup is certain to be one of the strongest in its 15-year history.

It is expected Williams will be partnered by rising star James Blake, who played in the event in 2000. Hewitt's partner will be revealed next week.

Williams, 21, became just the seventh woman in history to win three consecutive Grand Slam singles titles when she eclipsed older sister Venus in the final of this year's US Open. That followed her straight-sets successes against Venus at Wimbledon and the French Open earlier in the year.

She missed the Australian Open early in the year through injury but will complete the "Serena Slam" at Melbourne Park in January if she wins the Australian Open, the only Grand Slam that has eluded her.

Williams, who has won eight singles titles this year and pocketed more than $6 million, had tennis tongues wagging worldwide at the US Open when she work a black body-hugging outfit.

Former world No. 1 Martina Hingis, 22, will take another break from tennis following disappointing results after her comeback from an ankle injury. Asked whether she planned to be at the Australian Open, she said: "That is not decided, that remains open; I have set myself no dates."

Well Serena will win in Singles, but James may or may not win in singles and as a doubles pair, that will remain to be seen

Nice to see Serena playing for the Flag though

Hurry up Serena Perth awaits you. I cannot believe I will actually see serena in the flesh. I am so excited. Serena will be playing five minutes away from my house, i consider my self already standing in line.

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

Thumbs up Yessssssssssssssssssssssss!

mmcdonald - is there a rule that states that Hewitt can't play w/Kim? I wouldn't mind seeeing that.

And it is definitely a coup to cop the number one male & female player in December (when there is hardly in tennis to be found). Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - we get tennis in December. Hopefully - we'll get to see it!

The Hopman cup is a mixed event for players from the same country. That means that Lleyton's partner would have to be Australian. Of course, the rules for who can play for a certain country seem somewhat flexible, but I do think you have to have a passport from that country. I don't think Kim has an Australian passport.

Kim will play for Belgium. Lleyton will probably play with Alicia Molik or Nicole Pratt

Rennae Stubbs would be the best bet, period. She is an excellent doubles player and none of the Australian girls are gonna beat Serena in singles so Australia's best strategy is to hope that Lleyton can win and then to get Lleyton a really good doubles partner like Rennae so that they have a decent chance in the doubles. You can pretty much put a W in the column for Serena.

WOW!
Serena is making me happy because I get to watch her on Tv a lot since she plays a lot, and she wins a lot, she is everywhere these days, China, Japan, Germany, you name it, she's been there. On the other hand she is worrying me considerably, she is playing toooooo much, way toooo much, especially as something meaningless as hopman cup, in my opinion.
Hope she has fun though!

Rennae won't play. She doesn't play singles anymore because she was getting too many injuries and Hopman Cup would require her to play both singles and doubles

I hope Alicia plays too. It must have been horrible for her to have to pull out last year (when Lleyton got chickempox)
