I am not sure if Dementieva will get a title before Kournikova

Three years ago I thought that Elena Denentieva would be a top five player with a few title wins and maybe even a GS title at Roland Garros, but she has not been the same player since her Olympic finals loss to VENUS in 2000.

But now I am beginnig to wonder if Anna K. will end her career with more singles titles than Elena. It takes heart to be a champion and Elena may have to go on the Yellow Brick road with Dorothy to see the Wizard and see if she can get the same gift as the Tin Man to help her get a title or two in the future.

Anna has more potential than Elena infact Anna made finals in 3 tier I (Hilton,Miami,Moscow) and a tier IV (Shangai) and Elena only made final in a Tier I(Moscow) and 2 tier III(Acapulco, s'Hertogenbosch).

The fact that she was Silver Medalist at Olympics means more than being beaten by Venus there, IMHO.

Yep, Kfan, Anna, when she gets back on track, will still probably be the best Russian woman on the tour despite the hype that is now given a couple of other Russian players.

I thought Anna's serve was bad, but check out Elena's. Against Dani today she must have made at least 15 double faults. Yeah I know, Anna made twice as many early in 1999 but she sorted it out. And quickly. Elena's serving problem has been like this for a long while, but its been really bad the past 2 months or so.

But she's still a really good player, as she showed this week. What she needs to do is what Anna did, which is get a new coach. Unless you're Martina Hingis, having your mother for your coach is a big no-no.

Seles - That match was one of the last competitive matches that she was involved in especially against one of the current top two players on the tour.

Well, based on your statement, I should also mention that VENUS acquired 2 Gold Medals in that Olympics as well.

Well, she did beat Lindsay at the Chase in 2000. Unfortunately.

You know its tough to tell. Elena has had so many good draws this year (she shouldve made the SF at the French, and had a chance to get to the QF of wimbledon) and has been up and down.

I think she just needs to do something about her serve, her coaching and her confidence.

Its interesting because for some reason all the russians have serious serve/coach/confidence issues

Marat Safin was once quoted as saying that Elena was a good player, but that Anna was more talented.

Not sure what exactly he was referring to.

TP - Apparently he was referring to Anna's "talent" on the court.
I think.

Neither Anna nor Elena D. is the best -- or even 2nd-best -- Russian player on Tour now. I am talking about the whole package; not just raw talent, but the abiliity to use the raw talent to win.

Elena D. can win a small tournament next year (but only if she enters one that Anna does not also enter). But Elena prefers to enter larger tournaments for the most part. And there are quite a few players who are better than she is these days, so she is not going to snag one of those.

But it is a bit unfair to compare the number of finals they have each appeared in and use that as a gauge. Anna has played in 30 - 40 more tournaments than Elena has. Elena turned pro much later, and right in the improved-Venus-Serena era.
