Cowboys Stadium calls off tennis event

ESPN.com news services

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Cowboys Tennis Classic, scheduled for July 10 at Cowboys Stadium, has been called off.

A tersely worded statement from Cowboys Stadium officials on Wednesday said "a future date has not been set and all tickets will be refunded."

No reason was given for what the statement called a "postponement." Calls to the Cowboys weren't returned.

Last month, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had announced the event to be held six days after Wimbledon at his $1.2 billion stadium. It was to host a pair of best-of-3 matches, featuring Serena Williams against Maria Sharapova, and Andy Roddick against John Isner.

Williams, Sharapova and Roddick all have been ranked No. 1. The 6-foot-7 Isner is the second-highest ranked American men's player behind Roddick, and is known for a serve that can top 140 mph.

I really hate to say it, but they were out of their mind for thinking that a tennis exhibition match is going to fill an 80,000 seat stadium in America, especially in Dallas, regardless of who's playing. The sport just doesn't have THAT kind of popularity here. Something more than triple the size of Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Roddick/Isner? Not a chance.

The Roddick/Isner thing is kinda dumb but I'd pay to Serena vs Sharapova anytime.

I don't think it was ever the plan to sell out the stadium. That being said, I'm sure it didn't sell many tickets at all I went to the Fed Cup in Birmingham this April and was so sad to see how empty the place was Kinda pathetic...

I'm pretty sure they were just planning on something like 30,000 seats for the event, but not positive. Regardless, it's too bad, any publicity for tennis in the U.S. is good publicity.

Tennis is TX would sell well. They don't have an event...Just the players...Serena Clijsters or sure even Sharpi...but Isner? Really? Is he a Texan or something? Why not Roger or Rafa or somebody...

They need to offer more than what they planned.

Re: Cowboys Staduim Exhibition Postponed

They were only planning on having the event in the end zone...so they weren't planning on selling out the whole stadium. Plus if you paid a certain amount you would have got to meet the players at a party the night before AND before the match begins...which I definitely think is worth it. The Cowboys stadium is an amazing venue for any event, so it is a pity they cancelled the matches. I think they would have had a good crowd.
