Oracene the Price is right
To have 1 legend for a child is a thing of beauty but to have 2 legends that are listed among the greatest of all time is unreal. Oracene has been great not only for her daughter's careers but also for fans who can appreciate a wonderful woman who is a down to earth mother who applauds her daughter's opponents shots. I really love how she does not look like she is about to pass out from worrying when she watches their matches. Oracene & Richard are a dynamic duo.

The best mom is Oracene.

Dementieva's mom had the greatest impact but in a bad way.

Melanie Molitorova. She basically "made" Martina.

It doesn't matter. Melanie is the best mom in tennis history.

Re: Which WTA player's mum has had the greatest impact on their daughter's career?

Hard to say. Oracene should be declared a national treasure by Congress, but, far more than the other mom's listed in this poll, has to share credit with the other parent. You can also argue that, realistically for all Richard's bluster, he and Oracene have both been very canny about getting out of the way and letting professionals handle the girls' careers at key times. Of course, in some ways that is exerting an influence, albeit in a more subtle way.

The Mommy Vera/Elena relationship is probably more twisted and complex than we'll every really understand. I constantly hear contradictory reports on who really drives that bus--sometimes I hear it's Mommy Vera who calls the shots, other times I hear it's very much Elena who's in charge and is nearly impossible to coach due to her stubborness. It's certainly true that Lena wouldn't have been a tennis player without her mother's prodding, but it's not certain that their relationship has always been positive for Lena's career.

Snezana? Don't know her as well, but she always impresses me as more being along for the ride than Oracene or Mommy Vera. Not that she doesn't care, and not that JJ doesn't count on her for support, but she doesn't seem to pretend to be a "coach" like some of the other mom's do. (Oracene, IMHO, has always been more of a "manager" than "coach" and a damned effective one--I don't say that to disparage her at all). Their relationship doesn't seem to be on the same professional level as the WS, or as bizarrely dysfunctional as Lena and Mommy Vera.

Rausa and Dinara don't seem to be unusually close to me, maybe it's because I don't follow them closely enough. I think there was more influence when Dinara was little.

But Melanie Molitor was the one who said from the get-go she was going to raise a grand-slam winning daughter, even naming her after my personal choice for the greatest woman player ever. Yeah, I know you were all expecting me to pick Mommy Vera. But I'm going to cross everybody up and actually use my brain this time. Melanie Molitor it is, in a narrow win over Oracene and Mommy Vera.

Re: Which WTA player's mum has had the greatest impact on their daughter's career?

Rauza is the one who's proved she could coach a slam winer who wasn't her own child. She's probably the best coach. BUt even if you only give Orecen 50% credit, it's 50% 0f 33 slam titles, and three Olympic Gold medals. That's a shade better than Melanie Molitor. OTOH, Hingis might have won more if she'd actually listened to her Mom more in 2000-2.
