The switch: 16 seeds to 32 seeds

Let me start of by congratulating Francesca Schiavone...I've been a fan on hers for a long time and it's great to see her hard work pay off. She played well throughout and really stepped up her game when it mattered the most.

I know a while back when the grandslams switched from 16 to 32 seeds there was quite a debate. I think the first slam to do so was Wimbledon 2001. Many complained that this would make the first few rounds far too predictable. With Fran having been the 17th seed, she would've been just another unseeded player in the draw, meaning that she could've faced any of the 16 seeds in one of the first three rounds.

So did the switch to 32 seeds actually make surprise results like this more possible? Maybe there aren't as many early upsets and fascinating matchups as with 16 seeds, but does it actually make it more possible for a steady player ranked around 20th to make a deep run in a grandslam?

Definitely seems the case. We saw Francesca barely getting past Kulikova in 1R. Had she faced say Wozniacki or Stosur, she would definitely have not beaten them. She needed that first match to get used to the clay and find some form.
