How long before we have the first 40 year-old number one?

I honestly think it's possible the way things are going.

Re: How long before we have the first 40 year-old number one?

It will never happen. Ages are advancing and a career in the top 100 will be more likely in the future to extend from the ages of 21 to 32 or so and sometimes even three or four years longer while it used to be more likely to extend from 17 or 18 to say 27 or 28. But Kimiko Date-Krumm truely is a one off and I don't believe we will be seeing any other 40 year old top 100 players anytime in the 10 years and frankly I don't expect to see a player past the age of 35 defeating a top 10 player ever again.

And you have a problem with that because? If they are good enough to be number 1, then why the hell not.

Re: How long before we have the first 40 year-old number one?

Most past greats simply don't try this. I bet most past top 5 players could reside in the top 100 and occasionally beat badly playing top 10 players even at age 40. But what for? They wouldn't be winning significant titles and there are other things in life than just playing...

P.S. Assuming they are still free of major injuries at that age (rare)

With the declining standards in women's tennis, I honestly think it opens up opportunities to the middle-aged.

I also think that perhaps one day they should look at being more inclusive of wheel chair tennis. Who says they couldn't compete?
