Kim is better mentally than she used to be

Yes, that's despite the multiple chokes in this match

Before, the match would have been over after she choked the 2nd set away.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

She hit some clutch shots, especially that volley.

Still, this inconsistent shit has got to stop.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

sammy, iPatty and I have discussed it in another thread.. i'll try to pull it out. I wouldnt it call it mentally stronger.. just a different approach.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

I'd rather see her go down swinging than reverting to Kim-5ft-behind-the-baseline-retriever mode.

I have no idea what's going on in Kim's head when she plays Justine but it's almost like a fear... an extreme intimidation, or lack of belief in herself.

Hopefully Kim finds a way to deal with this but I think for now the only recourse she's developed is to completely separate herself from the match and just play.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

Interesting...I'm confused though... you are saying she became emotionally detached when leading and started spraying for that reason?

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

My personal opinion, which probably differs from sammy and iPatty is that emotionally detaching herself allowed her to play offensively (like match point). Or that emotionally detaching herself allowed her to not collapse especially after choking while not serving for the match.

She didn't let her emotions get the best of her... b/c I dont think she engaged her emotions at all. In the past, she would have folded like a cheap tent..or like a house of cards all falling down.
I think she found a way to avoid that. I think she still struggles to separate herself from the setting (Henin being her opponent), but it's what works for now.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

Well, whatever works.

I still don't understand her walkabouts...if it's purely mental vs Justine or if it's just that she can't maintain her level (As she hasn't been in a lot of matches since her comeback)

Hopefully no more matches like this the rest of the year

I'm really curious now what will happen if they meet on clay. Justine will have a big edge there IMO.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

If Justine can play like she usually does, she'll probably win comfortably. Remember, clay is Kim's least favorite surface I believe. I'm sure she'd like to win Miami and coast for the next few months.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

Yeah, Kim might as well skip clay. Not sure why she is even playing, considering she hates the surface.

Re: Kim is better mentally than she used to be

Her play when she was leading was just absurd. I mean, if this is an improvement..

She should give half of her USO prize money to the great Shino, cause she probably would've choked those match points, and against Serena there's no second chance.
