It's Official-Yanina won't play Fed Cup

She didn't say anything, but Fed Cup is no longer on her schedule on her website
She said "I will play even if I am on the bench, as long as we won" or something like that, but I bet her dad forced her to skip

He has a point though. Kim and Justine probably won't play when the tie is outside of Belgium . And it's only Estonia. I don't see why Applemans can't do this:
Day 1:
Ani-Wickmayer
Kanepi-Clijsters/Henin
Day 2:
Kanepi-Clijsters/Henin (whoever doesn't play on day 1)
Ani-Clijsters/Henin (whoever plays on day 1)
Estonia doubles-Wickmayer/Flipkens

I really don't see Yanina losing to Ani in Fed Cup in Belgium, and if she does then I'm sure that Kim and Justine will win anyways

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

Sabine hasn't announced anything yet right? As far as who's playing what. So I can't imagine why Yanina's already made the decision to skip Fed Cup. Are they playing on clay? If so, there's really no way she should be playing singles over both Kim and Justine.

Why does it matter? They are in no danger of losing and Wickmayer already played Fed Cup this year. Give someone else a chance, especially in a match where there is no chance of failure.

Re: It's Official-Yanina won't play Fed Cup

Sabine will probably withdraw since she's injured and entered in PVB, Charleston, and Stuttgart so far and is defending a lot of points
But she always plays well in Fed Cup...

Because Yanina might not play Fed Cup again. Marc Wickmayer said that she will not keep playing on this team if she is just going to be used as a spare. She has played foe Belgium for the last 7 ties I think and she (and Kirsten) have kept Belgium in the World Group II and I think she deserves to play too. If it was Russia or even a country like France, Slovakia, Australia, ... then I think it would be different, but this is Estonia

Well, let's be logical here. Henin and Clijsters are both substantially better than Wickmayer. Thus, if they are available to play, then the captain is obviously going to pick them. Just as Oudin would have been sidelined if the Williams sisters showed up to play in Italy last year.

Henin and Clijsters will sell more tickets than Wickmayer and I'm sure the Belgian public would rather watch their two greats. It's all a business. Wickmayer should realize that she is a substitute if Clijsters and Henin are healthy and choosing to play. Her father is delusional if he thinks otherwise.

Re: It's Official-Yanina won't play Fed Cup

I agree with you. I think that Marc is overreacting, but I also think that he has a point. Obviously Kim and Justine are more talented, but Yanina is very reliable in Fed Cup and I think Applemans would be stupid to not let her play singles in this tie, because then she probably won't play in the away ties. I think the European mentality is different than the American one. Greeks usually would say "If you don't want me now, don't ask for me later" so I don't know if it's just a Greek thing or a European thing, but I think Yanina is offended because it's only Estonia

This is the harsh reality of the situation. It's not entirely fair, but people have to do what they've got to do. And honestly, both Kim and Justine, in their entire careers, have done a lot for Belgian tennis already. If they get preferential treatment, it's probably because they are preferred, and it sucks, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. There are hurt feelings, but now that there's a third Belgian who's doing well for herself, someone will need to be the back-up. And Yanina's entourage feel the need to scoff at the opportunity to play doubles for her country?

And really I feel like Justine especially get the shitty of the end of the stick when it comes to Fed Cup. Justine basically had to carry the entire Belgian team against Italy a few years ago and when she was forced to retire in the final tie everyone got on her case. In 2006, she was the only one winning her singles matches every time she played Fed Cup, and still it wasn't enough.

Re: It's Official-Yanina won't play Fed Cup

Fed Cup is still listed in her schedule on the Dutch version of her site. I assume that's the most reliable one.

But I think they should let her play one match. They (Wickmayer, Clijsters and Henin) can all play one match, so that way they all attributed to the win over Estonia.

Right. It's only Estonia so why should the top ranked Belgian need to play?

I don't think either Justine or Kim will be insulted if they each only had to play once instead of playing both singles ties. If the Wickmayer team is that gung ho about playing singles, let her play both ties and Justine and Kim can take one a piece and play doubles together. That would probably be most entertaining for the crowd anyway -- to see them work together win or lose.

I agree. Clijsters and Henin aren't really needed to beat Estonia, because they haven't got any great players. It would be pretty insulting to Wickmayer to not let her play when she's also able to beat the players from Estonia (especially because she almost single-handedly beat Poland in the previous tie).
