Major changes in 2011 calendar?

It is not official yet, but Rome should become a combined-event from 2011.
It will last 11 days, just like IW and Miami now.

From next year, Madrid will be played a few weeks before (when the Rome mens' tournament is now probably) and Rome will be the same two weeks it used to be until 2008.

Do you know why they chose Rome and not Madrid? Does that mean that Rome replaces Madrid as a Mandatory Tournament?

Because Rome decided to that as soon as they got approval, they first talked about it in 2003. Long before Madrid came on stage. But I don't think it's gonna be a mandatory, you don't need to have a mandatory event in order to become a combined event.

It's good for the WTA to have combined events. Indian Wells had another record attendance year.
It gives fans a chance to see both WTA and ATP.
You dont get that in most big time pro sports. NBA does not have double headers with WNBA, with equal pay

Why would anyone bother with a two week premier event that isn't mandatory when you can play a one week event worth more points a couple days later?

Rome's history and the tournament is better than Madrid.

Madrid was the most boring tournament of the decade. Even Marbella was more exciting

NOOOOOOOOO I'm sick of joint events!

Proud fan of mugs, chokers and clowns such as...
Robson | Lisicki | Shvedova | Stosur | Pironkova | Kirilenko | Kvitova

Yeah for Beijing! Now all we need is a combined Cincy and Toronto/Montreal.

Re: Major changes in 2011 calendar?

Hopefully they will put beijing in a better spot on the calendar then. Last year Tokio&Beijing was a big fail because of its placement right after the usopen. The 2 most horrible weeks of tennis last year.

Re: Major changes in 2011 calendar?

Beijing is a very big deal for the WTA and ATP.
They have to work with organizors, the sports authority, the government.
When it is good for China to have the tournament, that's when to have it
