Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

When I first saw Yanina Wickmayer 2 years ago in Antwerp playing Top-Ten-player Daniela Hantuchova, nobody thought she was going to be that successful.

She was # 163 at that time and didn't play much on the WTA-Tour. She actually played a good match against world # 8 Daniela Hantuchova but lost in straight sets. I can remember that the commentator said that Wickmayer is proof of the power density on the WTA-tour, a girl playing that well and only ranked well outside the Top 100, she may never reach the Top 100 because there are so many girls playing like her these days...

Well, she broke into the Top 100 and is pretty close of breaking into the top ten. She's only 20 - what can she achieve in her career? Did she already pass her peak or does she climb even higher?
Do you like her game? Her technique?

Re: Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

Given the fact she doesn't have much points to defend until the grass-season, the chances for her to reach the top 10 are looking good. It will be hard to stay there, as she has a bunch of points to defend afterwards.
I don't believe she'll ever win a major, but she should be able to win some bigger tournaments in the future. But then again, there are Kim & Justine who also might push Yanina to higher limits!

Kim Clijsters - Maria Kirilenko - Ana Ivanovic - Yanina Wickmayer - Tatiana Golovin

RIP Nicole Vaidisova

Re: Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

Nice opening post.

I saw her in early 2008 in Fedcup match vs Ukraine. It didn't take me even a set of watching to fall in love with the girl and her tennis for good.

I like everything about her, gamestyle in particular, but I don't really want to think about what her future may be. Top 10 is very reachable goal as for now.

Re: Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

She is tall and strong, but only won 10 of 33 2nd serve points and Marion hit several winners on return of serve.
She can get into the top 10 based on the points from her flukey USO draw, but she has to improve a lot to be a threat to do something big.

Definately capable of getting thru early rounds, but so are Cibulkova and Bondarenko and many others.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

She's really the only Belgian I like, but I'm not a believer just yet.

Re: Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

She has won a lot of matches, but hasn't produced anything so outstanding that it makes sense to tip her for Grand Slam titles. As of yet. And she is now in a position where she has to meet expectations as well. This season will tell us a lot about her long-term prospects on the Tour.

If Caro can reach number 2 then the sky is the limit for Yanina. Fact.

Re: Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

You know, I've no doubt been impressed by Yanina's game... but I honestly feel like she is over-performing. I think that she has the potential to hang around in the top 20, or even top 10, for a while... but I think she could easily crash back down the rankings (much like Anna Chakvetadze or Maria Kirilenko) once she loses some of the momentum that she has gained.

I hope I am wrong though.

Re: Wickmayer - Big talent or big surprise

Shes beating the players shes supposed to beat, but she hasnt taken that extra step just yet, to really challenge the top players.
