I can see why people like watching Wickmayer play, but ....

... she's never going to win a slam with that game.

She plays like Younes El Aynaoui, big flashy game, huge ripping cuts at the ball, and when she gets rolling, it is scary. But nobody can play an entire match like that, much less an entire tournament. Muscles fatigue at different rates. That perfect timing she had for four or five games in the second set vs Bartoli? Bartoli sat back, kept the ball in play, and waited for her level to fall off. Then she picked back up HER level.

I'm also somewhat surprised that she doesn't have the same headcase reputation that Azarenka does. Up three sets points on the serve of a player you've broken half-a-dozen times in two sets, and instead they win the match!?!? That could give you a complex.

There a lot of athletic ability there, and a lot of skill. But the mental part is, at the moment, serious deficient. And she's already 20 years old. That ol' clock, she ticks.

Re: I can see why people like watching Wickmayer play, but ....

She only won 10 of 33 points on her second serve, and a lot of times Marion hit clean winners on her serve return. Yanina is okay, but has huge holes in her game.

Re: I can see why people like watching Wickmayer play, but ....

Her service placement is not that impressive and her feel at the net is awful and she does not really know how to defend... Kind of a ballbasher and I can NOT see why people like her game.

Because she flashy, and she's doesn't play like she doesn't know how to defend, she plays like she doesn't choose to defend. She's the anti-Wozniacki. Which has a lot to do with their respective rankings.

Agreed. She has no concept of intelligent placement when she's out of position. I like her game though, it's very physical. I hope she do some serious learning this year and become a solid top 10 player.

Re: I can see why people like watching Wickmayer play, but ....

I still think Wickmayer is overrated. She's never beaten a top 10 player before, and apart from Pennetta, hasn't ever had wins over anybody in the top 15 either. She's done a great job to win some tournaments and reach the US Open semis (despite the absurdly easy draw she had to get there), but I don't ever see her becoming a contender for major titles. Second week at the Slams here and there for sure, but definitely not winner's circle material.

Hopefully. She's 20, and still has a lot of room for improvement. She doesn't lack confidence, it's just strategy.

Re: I can see why people like watching Wickmayer play, but ....

^^Not now, but she's working hard to improve and is still somewhat young
A year ago her ranking was around 90...

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

Me neither, she's an arrogant brat with a negative attitude

They just had that superb point, great defense by Berdych and huge backhand by Roger.

Re: I can see why people like watching Wickmayer play, but ....

I feel as though Yanina could be a really good player. I agree with whoever said she plays like she chooses not to play tennis. I feel like if she finds a nice balance of aggression and intelligent play, she'll definitely stay in the top 10 for longer than some other people who have been there. I feel like she's got a raw game still, and it'll round out with more experience against top players. She's, at the moment, inexperienced. Compared with Wozniacki or someone around her age, she's done just as good as them so far (does U.S. Open SF count more than a Miami title?), and she's only going to get better.

I wish that people would just take her game as a 20 year old who's LITERALLY broken through instead of sitting on her laurels and watching competition fall apart and benefit from the debacle that ensues from having almost no top 10 players playing top 10 tennis.

I feel like this "lack" of defence is a bit off. I thought she defended plenty today. It was her erratic play and shaky serve that contributed to her loss. She couldn't string a few good points together, especially on serve.

When I fought I had opponents who 'defended' like that. When you had them under pressure, they tried to break your face. And if they missed, they tried to break it with the other hand. Wozniacki defends. Venus defends. Clijsters defends.

Wickmayer defends. Llike Venus circa 2001.
'Oh I'm ten feet off the court, on the run and can barely reach the ball? Take THIS bitch!'
You can call it 'defense' .......

I think it safe to say no one will ever accuse Yannina Wickmayer of 'going quietly into that good night'. She's gonna get her cuts in.
