Re: Ana Should Play Challengers To Bolster Her Confidence..
That rests on the aaumption that her problem is a lack of confidence. If that's the case, and I'm certainly not convinced it is, she could set a schedule of Internationals
, not even have to risk facing
more than one top player in a tournament, and pick up some nice appearance money from TDs happy to have a recent slam champ at their event.
The reason I don't buy the 'confidence' thing is that her game collapsed immediately
after she won Roland Garros. It didn't fall off gradually. It collapsed. Even last year's IW final was an illusion.
R64 Yakimova ........ W 6-4 6-3

QTR Bammer .......... W W/O
SMI Pavlyuchenkova .. W 6-2 6-3
FNL Zvonareva ....... L 7-6 6-2
A bye, a walkover, only one win against a player even in the top 30.
I don't see a confidence problem here. Winning a slam doesn't rob you of confidence overnight.
You have to have talent to have won a Slam at some point in your career. And she beat a very resistant and very good Jelena Jankovic on clay, a Schnyder when she WASN'T a joke, and wiped out everyone she was supposed to wipe out (Arvidsson, Safarova, Wozniacki, Cetkovska) and beat a Safina who was playing better than people give her credit.
