Ivanovic is right to pull out of Fed Cup

It will be tough for Serbia in their Fed Cup play-off against Slovakia now that Ana Ivanovic has withdrawn from the squad over form concerns.

I remember when the first signs of what was happening with Ana started and Sven Groeneveld, who was working with her then, kept telling her: "There's nothing wrong with your tennis."

I still don't think there is anything wrong with her tennis, fundamentally.

Yes, she's a little one-dimensional and yes, it would be good to have things added to her game, but she has got immense weapons. She didn't get to number one in the world and win the French Open by accident.

So it is there - but what's happening is so many other things are masking it. It is all between the ears really.

Can she get that sorted? Very likely, yes. It could be as dramatic a comeback as it has been a fall.

It may not happen; she may never get rid of the doubts that are in her head now. But I am optimistic that she can. It may take another year, it may take two years. But there's no reason it shouldn't happen.

She certainly looks shot to pieces at the moment but she is a cracking girl, good for tennis and exciting to watch. Some of the shots she hits are amazing.

I wouldn't be surprised if she came back. In fact I would be more surprised if she doesn't make it back into the top 10 at some point.

It will be tough to take for Serbia, definitely. Has she done them a favour? No.

Has she done herself a favour? I think she probably has.

It's got to the time now when she needs to do that. It's one crushing blow after another at the moment.

She tried taking a break at the end of last year, talking about having a holiday and how much she was looking forward to it.

But maybe it wasn't enough; maybe she does need a longer time away. It is all confidence and form and they are intertwined, sometimes in a nasty way which is what's happened to Ana.

Women's tennis has dramatic rises and falls and I wouldn't rule out another rise for her.

+++++++++++++++

I can't quite work out what's happening with Kim Clijsters at the moment.

I don't know what happened last week in Indian Wells or what happened in Australia; it's very odd.

This week she has looked the best player in the world, maybe Serena excepting, although she's not playing.

But a couple of times now we've seen almost a no-show from Kim. What happens there?

She plays at such a fast pace that sometimes, and you used to see this with Andre Agassi, it would take a while for everything to catch up with the way his mind was working.

And I think with Kim, because she does hit so hard and is so quickly into attack mode, sometimes it takes a while for her game to catch up with her.

I think that's the key with Kim. And if she's only playing sporadically then she's asking even more of herself, and I think that's why the blips happen.

But if we discard the blips then she's the best player in the world at the moment.

She destroyed Victoria Azarenka in the Miami fourth round. Four and love. No one beats Azarenka to love!

I haven't seen Kim's schedule for the spring, but I hope she's playing a fair amount. However I'm not sure she's playing a lot.

She needs matches and should not be pulling out of anything

Well, I hope she can get her head straight. She definitely doesn't need the pressure of Fed Cup.

She woke up one morning with the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen on her bed side table, and just went with it.

The problem with Ana is not her game. It's what's between the ears. I personally think this was a good decision. Ana lost three matches the last time she played Fed cup enough said.

If you win a grand slam with only beating one top 10 player (Jankovic, I think Safina was not in the top 10 then), then you are lucky.
I don“t say, she didn“t play well, but it isn“t that she had beaten the words best (Serena, Venus, Kim, Justine, Maria etc.) to win this title. She didn“t beaten Serena, Venus, Kim or Justine anywhere in her life.
So her rise to the top was no better than the rise of Safina, Kuzzi, Jankovic or Wozniaki. Just more lucky to get a grand slam with a draw of a tier 2.

She had made 2 slam finals prior to winning the French Open and she beat Venus en route to the Australian Open final.

Exactly. It's not even comparable, when you look at some other draws people have had to get through to win a grand slam. Namely, Maria Sharapova's 2008 AO Singles:

F: [4] Ana Ivanovic
SF: [3] Jelena Jankovic
QF: [1] Justine Henin
4R: [11] Elena Dementieva
3R: Elena Vesnina
2R: Lindsay Davenport
1R: Jelena Kostanić Tošić.

Didn't drop a set, and with x3 6-0 sets.

Re: Ivanovic is right to pull out of Fed Cup

When you say she got lucky in a slam, you may want to remember that she took out 2 of the top 3 en route to the 2007 RG final, and also 2 of the top 10 on her way to the 2008 AO final. Even if she only beat 1 top 10 player to her actual Grand Slam, it wasn't because she didn't have the ability to beat them, but because they themselves lost to other players. It isn't Ana's fault Serena decided to lose to Srebotnik instead of giving us a blockbuster QF

Waiting for Ana Ivanovic to just retire already .
Justine Henin. Amelie Mauresmo. Francesca Schiavone.

Re: Ivanovic is right to pull out of Fed Cup

This was a wise decision. And people who are suggesting her rise to the top had something to do with luck ... well they don't know better I guess. She beat a whole bunck of top 10 players in majors & other big tournaments.

Kim Clijsters - Maria Kirilenko - Ana Ivanovic - Yanina Wickmayer - Tatiana Golovin

RIP Nicole Vaidisova

Maybe it's better for her and Serbia's team also.
Now chances for winning it are better.

Re: Ivanovic is right to pull out of Fed Cup

I think the Fed Cup nightmare weekend was the turning point for her. She knew after the tie that she couldn't go on the way she was going and decided to get a new coach. I think she pulled out of Dubai to try and get her head straight.
She really doesn't want to go through the same thing in April, I think the pressure on her there is too much.
